Color Challenge - Thursday Green : Malachite Beads.... Necklace I Designed And Made
Brought these malachite beads from Nigeria and made them into a necklace adding the gold colored bead-trimmings. This mineral is widely popular and is often used as a gemstone for women in many african countries. It can be easily identified with its vivid green color and its banding or formation of stripes of contrasting color.
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral which had been used many centuries ago as gemstones, as sculptural ornaments as well as coloring pigments. Its green color does not fade and was used as pigments for thousands of years ago. As pigment, it can be easily ground into powder and was the oldest green pigment used for painting. The word malachite came from a greek word malakee meaning soft and its green resembles the mallow plant which indicated life. It is a mineral which have been mined to obtain copper by the ancient Egyptians. As gemstone, it is worn to have spiritual growth and it is said to block negative entities.
