Grand Canyon - Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon (or the old Hang Dong Quarry) has been our favourite experience in Chiang Mai so far! For those that have travelled to Chiang Mai, you might know it gets very hot in the daytime – Chiang Mai Canyon was our chance to strip off, take a dip and cool down not so far out of the heat of the city. A red mud canyon filled with emerald green water, perfect way to unwind on a hot Thailand day!

Chiang Mai Canyon is an old quarry which has been filled with water, after paying a small entrance fee (50 Thai Baht), visitors are allowed to bath here. Its been a popular spot for cliff jumping, with quite gutsy distances to take some good leaps into the water. The quarry is not advertised anywhere, so is not overpopulated or a usual overcrowded “tourist spot”, it is very chilled out on visiting, with only a couple of handfuls of people there, on the day we went. Recently it has been in the spotlight as a there has been a few deaths here, from unknown cause. Most likely it is said from people who aren’t strong swimmers, or people spending all day jumping of high cliffs, then climbing them, and getting cramps, or wearing their body out. The jumps were quite high, but all danger aside, man, what a load of fun!

There is beautiful bamboo rafts around the centre of the canyon, for people to lie on and relax. Since the recent deaths there is signs up “no jumping”, so we were assuming it was no jumping. But of course, there is no way you can really bust someone for jumping into water…Before long, one person had a jump, then the next, then the next, before long, everyone was lined up along the edge of the canyon taking turns to jump. A dream day out for any guy! For non-jumpers there is a ledge which has access to the water to swim on sunbake, as well as a cafe if you didn’t bring a picnic. Perfect day out in Chiang Mai!
