Steem blocksize report #2
One month after the previous Steem blocksize report, we take a look at the past month’s blocksizes.
This report covers blocks mined between:
August 12, 2016, 12:00 am UTC and September 12, 2016, 11:59 pm UTC
During this period, a total of 916 745 were mined, with a total size of 0.92 Gb
Our first chart is a semi-logarithmic chart that shows overall block size during this period, highlighting the min, average and max block sizes recorded.
Overall daily block size (in bytes)
Min | 115 bytes |
Avg | 1078 bytes |
Max | 65473 bytes |
Deviation | 1834 bytes |
We can see that the blocksize is now more stable as the chart lines are almost horizontal, with an average size of 1078 bytes (-30% compared to last month), we can also see that we still have empty blocks and maxed out ones.
In our next chart we take a look at the distribution of blocks depending on their size, to get a clearer picture of the percentage of empty blocks and full ones, and also the percentage of blocks below and above average size:
Size range (in bytes) | Number of blocks | % |
---|---|---|
< 121 | 35 509 | 3.87% |
121-1078 | 635 756 | 69.35% |
1078-50000 | 245 391 | 26.77% |
>50000 | 89 | 0.01% |
In conclusion, we can see the the Steem blockchain is looking pretty healthy with plenty of room to grow up with the majority of blocks being below the average size of 1078 bytes, we also notice the low percentage of empty blocks, which means posting is very active. Maxed out blocks are very rare.
Previous report: A look at Steem blocksize evolution
The prior month stats were corrupted by a bug that has been fixed. It will be good to see more stats like this going forward.
Maxed out blocks are most likely caused by large posts.
This answered my question! Note to self.... Read comments also before asking stuff
Thanks @dantheman for solving the maxed out blocks mystery. I will be posting timely updates to this report.
verry detail and informatif
Wow @dantheman - thx for info. That is great that you are informing here about stuff like this.
by the way I think it's worth mention - I like that something we are writing stays in the text field even when I refresh the site!
Thanks for the blocksize report @masteryoda
One can clearly see that there is so much more work to do and blocks to fill! I like to see everybody keeping it forward :)

Thank you masteryoda!
awesome report on blocksize :)
upvote always
Thanks for the updates.
Thanks for the info.... So a maxed block would mean tons of posts in a period of time? Just getting a understanding
Maxed out blocks are probably caused by large posts as dan mentioned, or could be some kind of lag happening causing many posts to be grouped in one block.
