Hello my brothers of this celestial community, in today's challenge, talking about animals, I am going to tell you about this beautiful beast, The Puma.
The cougar, mountain lion, lion or panther (Puma concolor): is a carnivorous mammal of the family Felidae native to America.
This great feline lives in more places than any other terrestrial wild mammal of the continent, since it extends from the Yukon, in Canada, to the south of the Andes mountain range and Patagonia, Argentina and Chile in South America. The puma is adaptable and generalist, so it is found in the main biomes of the Americas. It is the second largest felid in the New World, after the jaguar, and the fourth largest in the world, along with the leopard and after the tiger, the lion and the jaguar. Its size is greater than that of the snow leopard, although it is more related to the small cats, since, unlike the big cats of the Panthera genus, which can roar, the puma purrs like the smaller cats.
As an ambush hunter and predator, the puma pursues a wide variety of prey. Its main food are ungulates like the deer, particularly in the northern part of its range, but it also hunts camelids like the guanaco and species as small as insects and rodents. It prefers habitats with dense vegetation during the hours of stalking, but can live in open areas.
The puma is territorial and has a low population density. The extension of its territory depends on the vegetation and the abundance of prey. Although it is a great predator, it is not always the dominant species in its range, as when it competes with other predators such as the jaguar. It is a solitary feline that usually avoids people. Attacks on human beings are rare, although their frequency has increased in recent years.
The puma was considered a dangerous beast from the European colonization of America. This consideration and the progressive human occupation of puma habitats have caused their populations to decrease in almost all their historical habitats. In particular, the puma was extinct in the eastern part of North America, with the exception of the isolated case of a subpopulation in Florida. It is believed that this feline could recolonize part of its ancient eastern territory. With its wide geographic distribution, the puma has dozens of names and is mentioned with diverse references in the mythology of the aboriginal peoples of America and also in contemporary culture.
