in #india6 years ago

INS Kalvari will be commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 14 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai. INS Kalvari, the first of the six Scorpene-class submarine will be the first conventional submarine to join the Indian Navy in 17 years, giving a much needed boost to its offensive capability.

“Modernisation of the submarine arm is also well underway. We have accepted the delivery of Kalvari and we will formally commission her very soon. Trials of Khanderi, the second of the Kalvari Class, are also progressing satisfactorily,” Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba had said on December 1. All the six Scropene-class submarines are scheduled to join the force by 2021.

Named after the feared deep sea predator Tiger Shark of the Indian Ocean, INS Kalvari has been designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS and built at Mazgaon Dock Limited under Indian Navy’s $3 billion Project-75.

INS Kalvari is 66 metres long and is made up of a special kind of high-tensile steel which ensures that the warship can withstand high yield stress allowing it to dive deeper. The submarine can operate at a depth of 300 metres under water and travel 1,020 km underwater. It can carry 18 torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles underwater or from the surface.

Designed and built to bolster Indian Navy’s offensive capability, INS Kalvari can attack surface ships and destroy submarines under water. It can also be used to spy on enemy assets, gather intelligence and lay underwater mines to stop enemy ships from approaching Indian assets.

Two other sister submarines of INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi and INS Karanj are also on their way to join the Indian Navy after completing their trials and development.

India got its first of eight Foxtrot class submarines, also known as INS Kalvari, on December 8, 1967 when it was commissioned at the then Soviet Union’s naval base Riga in Latvia. The date is now celebrated by Indian Navy as Submarine Day. Commander KS Subramanian, a 92-year-old former Navy officer, who commanded the first Indian submarine, also called the INS Kalvari, will also be present on December 14 when the Prime Minister commissions the new submarine.
