How to install HomeBrew on your Mac

in #osx6 years ago

Hi!

As someone who basically learned how to use a PC thanks to GNU/Linux, not being able to manage the OS software from the command-line is a pain in the ass.
From there you have full control over your machine and have the ability to manage every component as you like (versus “as Apple likes”).

This is a short guide on how to install HomeBrew on your Mac.
Between all the available package manager homebrew is by far the most well known, thus I suggest you to start with it if you have no experience with a package manager or with managing your OS from the command line.
This simple post will be followed by others where I’ll use homebrew to install specific open-source software.

First head to brew.sh to get all the info you need about homebrew.

Once you’re ready open your terminal (press ⌘+space, type “terminal” and press Enter to launch it) and run this script that installs homebrew on your machine:

/usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

Then follow the instructions and… that’s it!
Homebrew is successfully installed on your device.

Also check the man page to get more info on the various options, variables and so on:

man brew
