Tal día como hoy en los años 1810-1823 fue desarrollo el proceso emancipador con el fin de de romper los lazos coloniales que existían para aquel entonces entre La Capitanía General de Venezuela y El Imperio Español.
La independencia de Venezuela se inicia en Caracas, el 19 de Abril de 1810, cuando un grupo de criollos caraqueños aprovechó la excusa de que en España estaba mandando un francés, para convocar una reunión del cabildo y proclamar un gobierno propio hasta que Fernando VII volviera al trono de España. El Capitán General, Vicente Emparan, no estuvo de acuerdo con esto, y cuando desde la ventana del ayuntamiento le preguntó al pueblo que se había reunido en la plaza mayor (hoy plaza Bolívar) si quería que el siguiera mandando, el presbítero José Cortés de Madariaga, le hizo signos a la multitud para que contestaran que "NO". Y eso fue lo que ocurrió. Emparan dijo que entonces, el tampoco quería mando, renunció y se fue a España con sus colaboradores. Se había iniciado la independencia de Venezuela.
