Final Chapter of: A Mouse's Tale!

A Mouse's Tale - the thrilling narrative of one mouse's journey through a human's domain; as told by the mouse.

And now we begin...

Chapter 5: The Escape

It had been

a very long night. The mouse kept waking up and trying to claw his way free, only to slip on the plastic and end up exhausted and in the exact same spot he was before.

When morning comes, he hears the human and tenses. He’s almost always in his den when she’s awake; but with any luck, this plastic box will conceal him and she won’t even notice. She does.

In horror, he watches her peer into the box, directly at him. At first she seems fascinated and he’s sure this is the end – she’s going to eat him and the box in one gulp. He poops what he knows will be his last. But she walks away.

A little while later she comes back, and all at once the box is sailing through the air. He glides through the house and then outside the house, and then inside another structure that absolutely reeks of the dogs. Is this their den? Was the door to the box going to slide open only to reveal a pair of slobbering jaws waiting to snatch him out?

Again, the fear poop.

But the

door doesn't open. The structure that smells so horribly of dog starts to bounce and jolt and vibrate and move. It’s loud too, like the structure itself is growling at him.

The mouse’s little eyes are wide (like they always are) and take everything in, although there’s not much to see. The human reaches out and puts a giant paw on the top of the box which actually eases the bouncing a little. But now her smell is mixed with the smell of dogs and the smell of his own fear, and it’s so awful he poops again. That helps ease his nerves a tad.

From the human’s mouth spew mewling noises, like kittens dreaming their murderous dreams and making noises in their sleep. The tone goes up and down, then up and down and doesn’t ever stop. Honestly, if this is what humans are like, he decides right then and there that even though he might die today, at least he lived his life as a mouse and not as one of them. It would be unbearable to be a human.

Suddenly

the bouncing stops and the growling dies away.

The damn human is still babbling about something or another as she lifts the box and again he goes flying through the air. They stop, and he smells it: grass. Field!

The top of the box vanishes and instantly he’s hanging upside down by his tail, mid-air, and blinded by the beautiful light of The Field. Gently, his paws touch the grass and his eyes come into focus. The human is directly in front of him, staring at him, ready to pounce and devour his little soul! For a moment he can't move. He locks eyes with the human, desperate, frozen. A bird chirps somewhere in the distance.

And then with a mighty, uncontrollable spasm, he leaps straight up into the air and as soon as he lands, turns and dashes into the safety of The Field and The Trees.

Escape! He did it. He beat the stupid human at her own game, broke free of her trap just as she was about to destroy him. Ah, the sweet, sweet smell of freedom! After a moment he stops to survey his surroundings and realizes he has no fucking idea where he is.

Once upon a time,

there's a field mouse wandering... well, the fields.
