At the present moment BIP 91 has been holding the necessary threshold (80% of mining power), with only about 80 more blocks to confirm. The price of Bitcoin has skyrocketed in anticipation of an end to the civil war and a return to the crypto bull market.

If BIP 91 is confirmed it will be implemented immediately and will upgrade the network to a large extent providing faster and cheaper Bitcoin transactions for all.

However there are a few things you should be aware of :

According to a recent article 'Peter Todd: Wait For 6 Confirmations After BIP 91 Activates' it's made very clear that after the upgrade its wise to wait before making transactions.

The community, businesses, users and investors have wanted the activation of SegWit and scaling of the Bitcoin Blockchain for awhile. However, like any changes, the soft fork execution of BIP 91 to activate SegWit should be handled with caution by both developers and users.

Todd explained that a high probability exists for the activation of SegWit via BIP 91 which will lead to multiple reorganizations. Amidst such change, Todd noted that users should only accept transactions with six confirmations for security purposes.

“More Warning: if/when BIP 91 activates, there's a high chance it'll lead to multiple reorganizations. Do not trust one confirmation transactions for now; wait for six+ confirmations.”

More importantly, Todd states that potential problems such as double spending that may occur immediately after the activation of BIP 91 will be fixed in the short term and hence, users should not be worried.

“BIP 91-related double-spends are likely to be a temporary event that's mostly resolved in only a few hours or days; this is a one-time risk. Since BIP 91-related dbl-spends are very likely to be a one-time event, a valid strategy could do nothing, and shut down if losses happen.”

Putting it all together

In a few more hours we will officially know that Segwit has been activated and the potential for a Bitcoin breakup will have been averted. In addition the new and improved Bitcoin will be a better product compared to the original version.

Furthermore its wise to wait to make transactions for a while until the system is tested thoroughly to avoid the chance of any errors or bugs.
