The first mentioning the games on the ice of frozen ponds, in which with the help of the clubs had to hit a certain goal, belong to the era of the Middle Ages. In the X-XI century, there are first references to games with ice clubs in Ancient Rus. In Russian chronicles it is told about ice fun, in which several people chase a round object, usually a vegetable. In different regions, the game was called in different ways: "stitching", "sticks on ice", "corral", "yula", "chase", "balling", "boiler", etc.
Первые упоминая об играх на льду замёрзших водоёмов, в которых с помощью клюшек надо было поразить определённую цель, относятся к эпохе Средневековья. В X—XI веке встречаются первые упоминания о играх клюшками на льду в Древней Руси. В русских летописях рассказывается о ледовой забаве, в которой несколько человек палками гоняют какой-нибудь круглый предмет, как правило овощ. В разных регионах игру называли по-разному: «клюшкование», «клюшки на льду», «загон», «юла», «погоня», «шарение», «котёл» и др.

Ледовые игры с клюшками были популярны и в Нидерландах.
