Sociology Sees Your Life Differently (featuring @juvyjabian as author)

People might not have heard so much about Sociology, nor have it properly defined mostly in the cases of students in the academe when asked by their Sociology professors during oral examinations and even by their parents by any chance. Well, it is simply because it is not widely introduced in elementary and secondary schools unlike Mathematics and any other Science courses based on experience. Sometimes, it is quite confusing as this field is always linked to some famous fields of study such as Psychology, and, at worst, associated with such as the same.

Sociology takes a very deep and critical sense in understanding one’s own behavior. It does not just view a person as a living creature, but also views him/her as a socially-oriented individual. The moment you wake up in the morning, you are automatically socially oriented to brush your teeth in order to get rid of that bad breath taken from your sleeping. The idea of cleaning your teeth is not just an instant creation of your mind that you have to do it.

To justify the claim, if you are not being told by someone else that you have a bad breath after waking up in the morning, you will not know that your breath is bad at that time, giving you no reason to brush your teeth even though you smell it by yourself. The concept of a bad and good breath is socially constructed within the society. Thus, it is not a fixed idea. Some people may not see a particular smell as bad, and some may see it so, depending on the social group you belong to.

What is Sociology?

Sociology is a Social Science that deals with the different settings, with different personalities within groups they are in, of different societies and study these things scientifically. Practically speaking, Sociology works out to answer the different phenomena in a society – ranging from specific groups of people to the entire society, and it also does in reverse. One’s own behavior is not taught as an independent variable but is something to do with how the society shapes patterns of thinking to produce such output behavior.

An individual problem, on the other hand, is not isolated with the other ones but shows connections with each other as it is analyzed as having a common source in the sense that it is just what the society is constructed. Once the society is structured as unhealthy to vulnerable people, problems would eventually keep occurring no matter what coping mechanism a victim takes unless that social system is overthrown and replaced with a new one that provides reliefs to the once helpless. For instance, when your community does not accept same-sex marriage, the people will tend to conform to the rule and intimidate the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) people, causing them to get isolated from the rest of the society.

That issue of the LGBTs will eventually give birth to another forms of social pressures put against them. Moreover, in an individual life, if you are an LGBT who lives in the society that does not allow you to enjoy your rights being as your current state of identity, you will probably suffer the same problems with your fellow LGBTs regardless of the differences of the status of your lives.

This Social Science proposes a lot of theories just to interpret the world for the comfort of every human being. You, as an individual, are also a job of Sociology to be done. Although Sociology studies the whole society, it also steps to your personal life with the purpose of examining your patterns of behavior leading to other people in order to track down the common and root cause of all these things that trigger all your behaviors.

Sociology to Behavior

When Psychology tells you that you have acquired your current behavior from your personal background, environment, and mental development in the past, Sociology tells you that you are not alone in this world who has that kind of behavior that you share with the others who have the same experience as yours a common sentiment and address the root cause that also produces other forms of behaviors to different individuals. With the help of such sociological theories, one can then sum them up to produce innovations and programs to address, or at least, lessen the visibility of the problems in any aspects since these theories came from different areas of life.

As much as it studies the norms and how people conform to them, Sociology highly pays attention to the behavior of the norm violators. Just like Psychology, deviant behaviors are one of the factors that strengthen the emergence of the study of Sociology. In fact, there is what is called Sociology of Deviance that is mainly concentrated in the study of deviant behaviors within the society. Sociologists believe that deviant behaviors are a manifestation of social problems and a failure to reach the standard imposed in a particular social environment.

When you become deviant, you are not just having a mental difficulty. Sociology tells you that your surroundings put pressures on you to make such behavior. If it is not the case, there is no reason for you to violate the norms unless if you have a mental disorder or biological problem.

Even your faith in a religion and the culture you embrace is a concern of Sociology. Your social integration with the community you live is a factor of your religious and cultural preference - if not so, then it may be your family's choice.

Sociology is different from any other fields of study. Among the Social Sciences, Sociology consists of them all. Sociologists believe in the saying "no man is an island." In your daily life, you may be judged negatively by the people around you just because of a single mistake you have made. They are just seen as one-sided or narrow-minded ones. Sociology, on the other hand, gives you answers to that in different ways and aspects and understands you thoughtfully using different sociological theories. To be short, Sociology never undermines you.

Knowledgeable post @knozaki2015. I liked it and upvote. I want to know what different do you do when you redo the post of other steemites? For me it always seems original when I read your article.

Keep steeming on!

Never give up because giving up would only mean that what you are doing does not worth it.

Thanks for this interesting post.

I think this is a study we continually need to look at with our fast paced life in the fastest technological era and how our interactions are more dependent with a presence of a device to interact in our social world. When was the last time you sat down with one or 2 other people without seeing anything from a smartphone, tablet, computer , tv, and had a conversation that doesn't end up involving something you saw on social media or the Internet?

Right @bitcoinparadise the development of new technologies are good but it should be moderately controlled. Lost of kids, teenagers and even adults relied so much on these technologies and sometimes leads to forgot being socially involved in a traditional way. Whatever they may call it, traditional ways are still very effective in developing societal consciousness.

Yes absolutely. I have noticed since growing up that I have become more impatient at times because we can get information so fast now. If a person lost their phone, most of us would be screwed if we were by ourselves and don't remember the actual phone number. We let our devices store it for us to make it easier than dialing the number.

Wow! I like what you did @knozaki2015 . You are helping to promote the article of others. Nice job. What a wonderful post. Keep it up!

I took sociology as one of my subjects many years back when I was in university. I have found it interesting especially with its theories of human behavior. Sociology also helps you to understand people of different cultures.
