New Life, New Creature
Life in Jesus Christ
The new creature is described in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature, old things have passed away, behold, all things are made new." The phrase "so that" refers us to verses 14-16 where Paul tells us that all believers have died with Christ and no longer live for themselves.
We "put off the old man with his deeds" (Colossians 3: 9), and we put on the "new man, created according to God in righteousness and holiness of truth" (Ephesians 4:24).
Our lives are no longer of this world; Now they are spiritual. Our "death" is that of the old sinful nature that was nailed to the cross with Christ. She was buried with him, and just as he was raised by the father, so we are raised to "walk in newness of life" (Romans 6: 4).
That new person who was raised is the one Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 5:17 as the "new creature".
There are new feelings towards all people, a new kind of love towards family and friends, a new compassion that was never felt before by enemies, and a new love for humanity. The sin we once clung to, now we want it to go away forever. Our new nature hates the sin that still has power over us. Now we are empowered by and for justice. Now we have the option to "let sin reign" or to consider ourselves "dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6: 11-12). Best of all, we now have the power to choose the latter.
