Pope Francis calls for a "peaceful" solution in Honduras where the state of emergency rules
Pope Francis today wished that the situation in Honduras, where the state of emergency governed and at least seven people died in violent demonstrations, could be resolved in a "peaceful" manner.
"In my prayer I also remember in a special way the people of Honduras, so that they can peacefully overcome the current moment of difficulty," the pontiff said after the usual Angelus prayer before thousands of people gathered in the Plaza de San Pedro.
The Pope made this reference to the situation in Honduras only a few hours after returning from an Asian tour that took him from last Monday and until yesterday, Saturday, to Burma and Bangladesh.
One week after the elections on November 26, Honduras still does not know the president-elect due to lack of agreement on special scrutiny.
The government decreed the state of emergency on Friday for ten days to stop the violent demonstrations that took place on Wednesday due to alleged fraud in the elections.
Those demonstrations, which have left at least seven dead, according to local media, led to violent vandalism and terror with the assault and burning of multiple businesses in several of the country's major cities and many other damages in public works and private property.
