Assistant Sheriff Brett Zimmerman met with members of the media to discuss additional details of the April 6, 2018 officer involved shooting that occurred in front of 258 Madge Lane. At approximately 4:44 a.m. LVMPD officers were in the area of Madge Lane and Mabel Road and were on the way to another call when they noticed a vehicle driving recklessly. The officers conducted a vehicle stop at which time the driver of the vehicle immediately got out of the car. The driver was later identified as 22-year-old Junior Lopez.

As Lopez got out of the car, a handgun fell to the ground. Lopez went down to his knees and both officers gave multiple commands to not move towards the handgun. Lopez had his hands out in front of him and reached towards the handgun lying in front of him on the ground. Officers continued to give commands to Lopez not to move towards or touch the handgun.

Lopez reached forward, picked up the gun off the ground and began to raise his arm. Both officers fired rounds from their duty weapons at Lopez. He was struck, fell to the ground and rolled to his back. Officers continued to give commands to Lopez not to reach for the gun, which was only about a foot away. Lopez again reached for the gun and one of the officers fired one additional round, striking Lopez.

The suspect was transported to the Sunrise Trauma Center where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. Two women were in Lopez’s vehicle during the incident but were not injured.
