On Thursday, January 11, 2018, at approximately 10:50 p.m., officers with the North Tryon Division of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and members of N.C. Probation and Parole were briefing in the CMPD parking lot when they were fired upon multiple times. Several officers returned fire

CMPD Officer Casey Shue suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg in the shooting and was transported to the hospital.

The suspect, Jonathan Bennett, was also shot during the incident and was transported by MEDIC to CMC Main, where he was pronounced deceased. Jonathan Bennett was the suspect wanted in connection with the murder of Brittany White who was killed earlier in the day.

The CMPD officers involved in the shooting were identified as Jeffrey Zederbaum and Jared Decker. Officer Zederbaum was hired on January 12, 2009, and is assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit. Officer Decker was hired on July 21, 2014, and is also assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit.

As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, the Internal Affairs Bureau conducted a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office reviewed the case and found the officers acted lawfully.
