If you go to Harderkulm (above Interlaken, Switzerland) but it is lost in the fog, then push on up the ridge to Wannichnubel 40 minutes up the ridge. Comes with better views too....

In the winter in the Alps you get temperature inversion which gives you dense fog on the ground and beautiful sunshine with clear views above. Fantastic for a tourist - crap for locals stuck down in it all day. After a working week in the fog you often see people taking the cable-cars up to just sit in the sun and read the newspaper at the weekend.
This was actually the first time I wandered up here. It never tempted me before being just right above Interlaken and not that exciting compared to other things in the region, however I felt like something new but quick and easy to get to so this fit the bill. Also one of my goals here has been to walk from Harderkulm along the ridge to Brienzer Rothorn (or VV) during the summer, so this seemed like an excuse for a reccy with a bit of sun and snow.
I walked up from the western side to Harderkulm which was in the sun (very nice having the path all to myself, even came across a few Steinbock or similar on the way up), then pressed along the ridge towards Roteflue. Coming back I went up the lookout at Wannichnubel lookout which I had to myself.

By the time I got back down to Harderkulm to take the funicular down the fog had climbed up to engulf it. Plenty of tourists were coming up and taking photos of the fog but almost none of them seemed to think to wander up the ridge a bit to get some sun and views to make up for the price of the ride up/down. Maybe the snow put some off - but when it hasn't snowed for a few days it is a fair bet that someone will have already trodden it down for your giving a nice prepared path. So long as your shoes are semi-waterproof you can often do quite a bit in snowy spots without any other gear.
