For the first time in seven years, as the company's data showed on July 2, the number of Samsung Electronics employees dropped in 2016 mainly due to restructuring in China. The number of workers in the world's largest smartphones and chips factory fell 5.2 percent to 308,745 in 2016 from 325,257 in the previous year, Yonhap News Agency reported. According to the region, the number of domestic workers fell by 3.8 per cent to 93,244 per cent, while the number of workers abroad fell by 5.8 per cent to 2,15,541 per cent.

At the end of last year, the proportion of employees in Samsung overseas companies decreased by 0.4% to 69.8%. Samsung's staff in China fell 17.5 percent to 37,070 last year from 44,948 the previous year, while the number of workers in North and South America rose 8.5 percent to 25,988. A company official attributed the decline in staff partly to selling printing to HP.

He said that the restructuring of companies in Samsung's factories in China and other Asian countries also led to a decline in the overseas workforce. The percentage of female employees was 44 per cent last year, down 2 percentage points from the previous year. However, the proportion of female managers and executive managers rose to 12.7 per cent and 6.3 per cent last year from 12.4 per cent and 4.5 per cent, respectively, over the previous year.

Samsung sold print jobs to HP in 2016 at about $1.05 billion.
