INDYCAR to test a Windscreen - Can Formula One learn something?

in #cars7 years ago (edited)

I doubt it, they have made their choice and gone with Halo and if you read my previous article it’s no secret that I hate the bloody thing.

Here is the solution from INDYCAR:-

The issue of safety with open wheel cars is a big concern with a few bad accidents in the last few years, and the various formula’s have scrambled to implement a solution to protect the drivers from flying debris.

“Lets put something in front of the driver, reduce visibility and make the car look as stupid as we can” This is the thinking of the F1 legislators and well I do hope it does its job.

“Lets make something that will protect the drivers, still allow them to see where they are going and maybe look good as well”
This is the thinking of INDYCAR and their idea has impressed me much much more than F1, they have thought about protection and keeping the cars looking good at the same time.

It also gives the race cars a visual link to the production cars that we all drive, a windscreen who would have thought?

"This has been a long process, one that's been very methodical and purposeful," INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations Jay Frye said.

"We have been striving to create a safety piece that aesthetically looks good and works in all conditions, and this is a test of those things.

“Any piece we put on an Indy car must work for multiple types of venues and different lighting conditions. It has to be versatile.”

As per INDYCAR: “The prototype windscreen has been tested in a scale-model wind tunnel and racing simulator at Dallara, INDYCAR's chassis producer.

“Harding Racing's Gabby Chaves provided driver feedback after testing in the Dallara driving simulator last year.

“The on-track test at ISM Raceway is the next step in its evolution, though Frye said there is no timetable for implementation in Verizon IndyCar Series competition.”

Lets see how things go I don’t want to see people being hurt, motor racing is very dangerous, and I hope all these solutions will produce safer racing.

I have included a picture of an old F1 Brabham, this car had a windscreen, it was basically a death trap and the windscreen would do absolutely nothing in an accident but my point is F1 cars had windscreens in the 60’s through to the 80’s and perhaps if they developed the idea instead of dropping it we would have safer cars and much nicer looking cars as well.

Thanks for reading.

The Yellow F1 image was taken by me, copyright Gyro, you should not see it anywhere else but Steemit, thanks for looking.

It must be a nightmare for the drivers to squeeze in and out.

I suppose they get paid enough not to put up with stuff like that though.

Great read mate thanks for the info. Lets hope that atleast the drivers are better protected.

Yes exaclty, and thanks for reading really appreciate it.
