Budget carrier Peach Aviation rethinks accepting virtual currencies
A Japanese budget airline is having second thoughts about accepting virtual currency.
Peach Aviation announced last May that it had plans to start accepting bitcoin. The firm had hoped to attract more foreign travelers as transaction fees for the currency can be much cheaper than those for cash, and bitcoin transactions can be done on smartphones.
Headquartered in Osaka Japan, Peach Aviation is a well known Japanese air carrier service offering low-cost air travel since 2011.
An increasing number of retailers and restaurants in Japan are considering accepting virtual currencies. But the recent events at coincheck have led many to remember the days of MTGOX and have led to calls for more regulation.
Peach Aviation says it's thinking about canceling a plan to accept such currencies for ticket payments.
Coincheck is an exchange that's widely used in Japan and the recent fluctuations in cryptocurrency markets alongside the hacks have made them question the reliability of digital currency.
