Did you know that DC Comics has a Venezuelan hero?

in #comics6 years ago

Long before Marvel presented a Venezuelan mutant, DC Comics already had a heroic character from these lands: Bushmaster.

Back in the '70s DC Comics unveils the character Bernal Rojas, alias Bushmaster, translated into Spanish that we speak Venezuela means the name of the snake "mapanare" or "cuaima". Bushmaster makes his first appearance in the comic SuperFriends # 8, titled The Mind Killers, in November 1977.

Bernal Rojas did not have super powers, however, he was a herpetologist: a scholar of reptiles around the world, who copied their natural abilities and imitated them by inventing devices. Like Bushmaster, he wore a disguise that incorporated a variety of these weapons and contraptions that gave him the ability to imitate the abilities of these reptiles, such as: boots and special gloves to climb walls and run over water; as well as planning just like a flying dragon. He also possessed glasses that gave him a wide radius of vision (infrared vision), and a pistol loaded with tranquilizing cartridges. His suit was equipped with sensors that detected heat and light, and a cover with anti-bullet protection. Also, this suit gave him the ability to camouflage and blend in with the environment, making it practically invisible.

On one occasion, Bushmaster helped Batman and Robin to dismantle a bomb placed in Venezuela by the alien Grax, to then capture the villain.

This Venezuelan hero was an active part of the team known as The Global Guardians - a team made up of superheroes from all over the world that was supervised in the beginning by the Dome, an organization to which all nations except the two great powers, the United States and Russia). This team operated from The New Dome or The New Dome. It was not left in Venezuela (the country of origin of our hero, where he performed his first exploits independently); but in a fictional nation of the DC Universe called "Bialya" or "Bialia", name presumably based on "Libya" (almost an anagram of Bialya). It is believed that this country is located in North Africa or in the Middle East.

In one of his adventures, Bushmaster, along with some Guardians of the Globe, confronts Queen Bee of Bialya who does a brainwashing. Once recovered his memory, Bushmaster is with which it would be his greater enemy: the sorcerer Fain Y'onia. After a desperate fight, Bushmaster is pitifully murdered by some criminals while fighting Fain Y'onia.
