The Montreal massacre: Canada's feminists remember

in #abuse7 years ago (edited)

In 1989, a gunman killed 14 women students in Montreal. This week, Canadian feminists will remember an event that scarred the country – and strengthened their radicalism

Remembrance of the victims of
the Montreal Massacre December 6, 1989

Markham, Ontario, Canada has Proclaimed
Dec. 6 as the National Day of
Remembrance and Action to End
Violence Against Women

What Happened Exactly

According to the Montreal coroner's report acquired by Diamerni.com, the events of December 6th, 1989 played out like this:
Sometime between 4pm and 5pm, Lépine entered the engineering school, with a hunting rifle and hunting knife. He did not take any violent action until around 5:10pm, until he entered classroom C-230.4, and after firing into the air, separated the individuals in the class by gender.
Within the classroom, Lépine shot at a group 9 girls, stating "I am fighting feminism." Of the 9, 6 were killed.
Lépine then moved to room C-228, then to the school's cafetaria, and classrooms on the third floor of the building. In that span of time, from 5:10 to about 5:27, Lépine killed 8 female students and wounded 14 others. In total, 14 female students were murdered.
Lépine then turned his gun onto himself and shot himself in the head. This was Lépine's original goal, as outlined in his suicide note written before the massacre occurred

Why It's Still Relevant & Why You Should Still Care
28 years is a long time, and in the quarter of a century that has passed since Dec. 6th 1989, one could argue that the motivations behind the Polytechnique Massacre would no longer be relevant to the state of modern Montreal society. The opposite is the case.

Violence against women is on the uprise. 1 in 4 women in York Region, Ontario, Canada alone will suffer some form of abuse in their lifetime. This breaks my heart. This is why I give my time and effort to events regarding the betterment of abused women.
