Saint Gatien Cathedral in Tours - France

in #english6 years ago (edited)
How rich it is to travel, to admire landscapes, to know stories from other places, cultures and even the climate to which we are not accustomed! Fortunately, France has a lot to offer, from monuments, architecture, landscapes, climate, that is, everything. For us, Latinos are like transporting ourselves to another world. In this opportunity I will tell you about:

The Cathedral of Tours

Impetuous Historical Monument and also admirable, it was built between 1170 and 1547. Its full name San Gaciano Cathedral of Tours and in French is cathédrale Saint-Gatien de Tours is a Catholic cathedral church, dedicated to San Gaciano (hence its name), the First bishop of Tours, it is the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Tours and the metropolitan cathedral of the ecclesiastical province of Tours.

This majestic Historical Monument has a large facade and is extremely tall, has exquisite decorations and the temple itself is also large since it is almost one hundred meters long and about thirty wide. Upon entering, the main nave is the most striking for the arches that surround it, the simplicity of its roof and because natural light enters through stained glass, giving color to the space. There is so much beauty both inside and outside the monument.

This Cathedral possesses an exceptional jewel and it is its collection of stained glass windows. The most beautiful, dazzling, decorate the chapels of the ambulatory and the high windows of the choir. This is one of the best sets of the thirteenth century (stained glass medallions) existing in Europe, complete, intact, multicolored, very varied. It is necessary to add the two rosettes of the transept, of the XIV century, and those of the nave and the facade, of the XV century. Another beautiful 15th century stained glass window adorns one of the side chapels, it is really beautiful.

Among the treasures that can be seen inside this Cathedral is the organ, which was donated by Archbishop Martin de Baune and built by Barnabé Delanou in the sixteenth century. It was damaged during the wars of religion, experienced several restorations and even in the seventeenth century a true reconstruction, probably around 1620. The style of the current buffet is characteristic of that time. It's amazing so much history.

Also there you can see the tomb of the sons of King Charles VIII of France and Anne of Brittany, who unfortunately died as children. This tomb, in marble from Carrara, is of pure Renaissance style.

Definitely magical, I find it incredible that there is so much beauty and I love seeing historical monuments, it's like being transported in time
