First battery-powered connected credit card revealed at CES

The Internet-connected Wallet Card switches between your credit cards at the touch of a button.

The era of smart credit cards has arrived, as cell network Sprint and fintech company Dynamics unveiled their new Wallet Card at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Sprint claims the Wallet Card as the world’s first secure credit card that’s connected via a battery-powered cell phone signal. It’s the same size and shape as a typical credit card, though it has an embedded cell phone chip, antenna, battery and recharging chip to keep it connected to the Sprint cell network. It also contains a magnetic stripe, EMV chip and contactless chip, all of which are dynamically programmed by the Wallet Card depending on which credit account you want to use.

Those features allow you to carry just one card but have secure access to all the different credit, debit, prepaid, multicurrency, one-time use and loyalty accounts you normally carry. All it takes is the press of a button on the 65,000-pixel display and user interface to switch from one to the next.

The technology behind the Wallet Card just won Sprint four awards from the Consumer Technology Association.

Cards initially come unprogrammed and can be easily activated from anywhere. If they are lost or stolen, a replacement can be delivered within hours and all card information quickly downloaded to the new wallet. Also, if a data breach affects a credit account’s issuing bank or merchant, the card number can be instantly deleted and replaced with a new number that’s sent directly to the Wallet Card.

As you carry the smart card, it charges itself through normal use and never has to be recharged manually.
