From rescuer to rescued: Doctor and paramedic save each other's lives 30 years apart

When Dr Michael Shannon saved the life of a premature baby 30 years ago, he would never have thought decades later, the favour would be returned.

KTLA reported on Sunday the incredible story of two men in California who saved each other's lives in two very different ways.

The news station said that Dr Michael Shannon, a pediatrician, found himself pinned inside a burning vehicle after a car accident in 2011. One of the rescue workers who had helped to free the seriously injured Dr Shannon from the car was Chris Trokey, a young Orange County Fire Authority paramedic.

When Mr Trokey visited the hospital where Dr Shannon spent 45 days recovering from internal injuries, he realised that the man he had helped save was the man who had given him the gift of life 30 years earlier.
According to KTLA, Mr Trokey was born weighing just 3.2 pounds (1.5 kilograms), and was given only a 50 per cent chance of surviving. Dr Shannon worked around the clock in an effort to beat the odds and stabilize the baby boy.

The world has been just an awful suckhole of bad news lately. If, like me, you are in need of a brief respite, then you are about to get it from the story of the devoted pediatrician who saved a premature baby’s life and then had his own life saved in return.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, 30 years ago Dr. Michael Shannon saved the life of a premature baby boy who weighed just 3.2 pounds at birth and was given a 50-percent chance of survival. It was tough, but Shannon reportedly stayed on round the clock until the baby was stable.

Many years later, Dr. Shannon was involved in a terrible car accident. His car was trapped under a burning truck, on fire with him inside. Firefighters on their way back from a different call were able to get to the scene in minutes and had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Shannon from the burning vehicle. Among the heroes who stopped that day was a young paramedic named Chris Trokey. Yup. It was the premature baby.

After seeing Mr Trokey once again at a recent cancer fundraiser, Dr Shannon told KTLA: "It's amazing to watch them all grow up, but to have one come back in your life, on a day you really need it, that's really incredible."
