Rumeli Fortress (also known as Throat Cuts Fortress) is the fortress in the district of Sarıyer in Istanbul.
It was built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet directly opposite the Anatolian Fortress in order to prevent attacks that might come from the north of the Bosphorus before the conquest of Istanbul.
This is the narrowest point of the strait. Rumeli Hisarı Concerts are held in the venue for many years.
The necessity of a strategic fortress on the Bosphorus was well-known for the Ottomans who began to harbor the city of Constantinople as a new capital for their later empires at the end of the 14th century.
During an attempt to conquer an earlier Ottoman city, Sultan II. Murad (1421-44, 1446-51) faced difficulties due to the blockade of the Byzantine fleet. Learned the importance of maritime strategy from this previous initiative. Murad's son II. Sultan II. Mehmed (1444 m 46, 1451 attack 81) began planning a new attack in 1451 immediately after his ascension to his throne.
