IS HYPNOSIS TRUE?

source:google image

Over the weekend, I watched a psychological thriller entitled “Trance”. The movie revolves around the story of Simon,an art auctioneer, who was involved with a group of criminals with a hypnotherapist to retrieve a lost painting. It made me contemplate whether hypnosis is true or is it just pure tricks?

There are lots of approaches that pave way to understand hypnosis. The following are: Pyschoanalytical Approach, Trait Approach, Biological Approach, Humanistic Approach, Behavioral and Social Learning Approach and Cognitive Approach. THAT’S A LOT. To make it simpler, I surfed the internet for the simplest definition there is and I found one from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnosis ,”
Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion. The term may also refer to an art, skill, or act of inducing hypnosis.” In short, Hypnosis is suggestibility. This means that the person being under hypnosis is aware and relaxed allowing focus on the hypnotist. Also, if there are things that the subject doesn’t want to do that the hypnotist suggested, he/she will still not do it.

FACTS AND FALSEHOODS OF HYPNOSIS:

  • Can anyone be hypnotized? Yes. But there are certain exceptions, those with mental illnesses and those with resistance.

  • Can Hypnosis enhance recall of forgotten events? A 2001 study from Ohio State University suggested that hypnosis doesn't aid memory recall. If you can’t remember it awake, then neither can you asleep.

  • Can hypnosis force people to act against their will? NO. Remember that hypnosis is suggestibility. Hence, the subjects are still in control how they react with the suggestions given by the hypnotist.

  • Can hypnosis alleviate pain? Yes. Hypnosis can alleviate acute pain.

PROCESS OF HYPNOSIS:

Different hypnotists have different methods but these are the general guidelines.

  • First, the subject voluntarily wants to be hypnotized.

  • Second, the subject must believe he or she can be hypnotized.

  • Third, relaxation of the subject is a necessity.

WHAT ARE TRANCE INDUCTION METHODS?

Here are some of the trance induction methods:

  • Eye Fixation

  • Progressive relaxation and imagery

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HYPNOSIS?

The types of hypnosis are hypnotherapy, Self Hypnosis (Yes! This is possible.), Traditional Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP Hypnosis.
To sum it all up, yes hypnosis is true but somehow the idea of it got twisted due to the influence of media. However, after reading this we could make up our minds about it. I hope this article helps! Thank you so much for reading, make sure to drop a comment below! and ohh! try checking the movie "Trance". I'm sure you'll have a good time

Gonna watch this movie! 😁

nice jd ni cya hehehe @wandergirl

I used to watch this guy in Youtube hypnotize real random people and it looked legit. The tricks he used were hand gestures and touches to the hand, arm or head and the person will become immobilized and unconscious. In his words he said hypnosis was confusing or shocking the conscious part of the brain so that it becomes inert and open to suggestions.

He was nice though, he gave good suggestions to the people he hypnotized like being a good student, being a good parent, etc.

But I shudder to think of people who use those methods for wrong reasons. ._.

I'm watching this movie after reading your post. @brokemancode :)
