Vivaldi ~ 4 seasons

Just a quick listening review I did of an amazing piece of music,. please listen along and read what I said, tell me if you agree or disagree, -How do you hear this piece? what does it do to your soul.?

♫♫

Spring- This piece of music is very beautiful, it feels very balanced between the full orchestra and the soloists as well as the movements themselves have great interplay and the pace between all three keeps a listener captivated. Particularly near the two-and-a-half-minute mark of the third movement you hear the tonality lower into and starts to play descending runs into a drone, out of which a soloist speaks up with great voicing over the singular note. We are then we are brought back into home key and are familiarized once again with the movements original pace.

Summer- Initially this piece feels dreary, hot and dry. Like we are in the desert without water. It has a bit of a hopeless quality to it. The first movement is carried by the soloist violin/viola and instills an anxiousness to the listener with moments for a breath as dismay sets in. Then like a leaf we are fluttered gently down, we feel relief only to be raised up in a gust once again anticipating the next movement. The second movement is a balanced piece starting solemn around a beautiful violin and is soon agitated into an aggressive elegant dance of grace and balanced moments of poise. The arrangement is very tight, the players all feel completely in sync by the end of the piece as it finishes on a prominent and confident note.

Autumn- The confidence of the last piece blossoms into a very elegant and intended sound that feels as if you can already anticipate where it is pulling the listener towards. This does not necessarily make it mundane or any less fantastic as the piece is able to grasp and surprise the listener every time without hesitation. It is a very abundant sounding piece with the whole orchestra playing in great unison at times. At the start of the second movement this changes and you almost develop a pit in the stomach as autumn progresses the bass section is much fuller and the soloist is now the harpsichord no longer the violas/violins. The movement finishes and the next one starts with a familiar elegance but more mature sounding, “life goes on the same”. You get some interesting rest patterns from the rhythm section near the end of the movement and then your attention is grabbed by the soloist strings again as it comes to a graceful finish.

Winter- Winter Starts with a bit of a wretched eagerness, the looming lower toned strings sitting below as the higher notes pierce through and prod you along the musical path. The orchestra seems to have 2 general voices trading back and forth competing and playing off of each other. The second movement has a bit more of a welcoming quality to it, the strings are gentler and have lost they’re eager pace and piercing notes. It is short lived though, the third piece starts with a low drone bass note and the soloist strings pick up their pace slightly. It feels like it is coming in little spurts of excitement, and then falling down. It feels very silencing cold and permanent. Eagerness comes back in near the end as the orchestra begins to sound fuller for the end of the piece.
