VIDME Goes Down

One of our alternatives to the Youtube machine got whacked out. They sent me this email.

I'm going to make a video about this but this is the heart of the matter:

Although we still believe that the world would greatly benefit from a creator-first video platform, we weren’t able to find a path to financial sustainability. Here are major obstacles we encountered in our attempts:

Monetizing user-generated content is increasingly challenging

Advertisers want to target specific audiences, which means a new platform that doesn’t store troves of personal user data is at a severe disadvantage relative to Facebook and Google, which combined control 60% of online ad spending in the U.S.

Most advertisers want their ads to complement “brand-safe” content. Unfortunately this is a subjective designation, which is difficult to define and enforce. Content, therefore, must be thoroughly reviewed and moderated — an expensive prospect. As YouTube recently learned with the “adpocalypse,” even a single poorly-moderated video can result in a PR disaster and undermine advertiser trust.

Few advertisers are willing to negotiate direct deals with platforms that don’t have enormous scale, meaning ad-revenue rates are lower for newer platforms. In turn, there’s less overall revenue to be shared with creators, which means creators are less likely to support newer platforms for a sustained period of time.
Although we introduced direct fan patronage as an additional business model, the profit margin was insufficient to cover the high costs of storing and delivering video.

Sort:

DTube has been recommended already and it is certainly up and coming, but not quite ready yet. Things got better, though. The biggest drawback is, videos can't be deleted, so if you run into unforeseen trouble, e.g. an unintended copyright violation, you can't take it down which might create a legal hassle. Another disadvantage I see in DTube is the forced Steemit page and the poor control over Steemit tags.

Another non-corporate site is BitChute (https://www.bitchute.com/) which s build on the concept of peer-to-peer connections. It works reasonably well, although still has hickups in delivering video at times. Something to try and keep an eye on. Disadvantage: It can only be linked to from Steemit and takes your users AWAY from the Upvote-button to an outside page.

Personally, I like Vimeo. No ads, full control over my stuff, excellent delivery through worldwide cloud. The free version has a weekly upload limit which may be too restrictive to some. I opted for the paid PRO version instead ($5.00 / month) which is all the upload volume I'll ever need. The big advantage with regards to Steemit is, the Vimeo player EMBEDS directly on the your Steemit page (like YouTube).

You can try Vimeo vs. Steemit with my latest post here, and perhaps you even like the video enough to upvote/follow/resteem:

Move them over to d.tube

Its a little tricky and slower than other platforms, but once they're there, they'll be locked into the blockchain.

I have literally uploaded hours of video there.

Just an idea

Problem is: dtube does not deliver trustful perfomance on a daily (and mobile) basis.

All new platforms have their growing pains.

great idea following you now
