the importance of Silicate in your life

in #science7 years ago (edited)

The silicates are the largest, the most interesting and the most complicated class of minerals than any other minerals. Approximately 30% of all minerals are silicates and some geologists estimate that 90% of the Earth's crust is made up of silicates, SiO44- based material. Thus, oxygen and silicon are the two most abundant elements in the earth's crust.images.jpg
There are two forms of silicate when looking at their chemistry:

felsic-The fel stands for feldspar while the sic represents silica. They form in granites and are lighter in weight and color than other silicates because they have less iron and magnesium. Quartz, micas, and the K-feldspars are noteable members of this group.
mafic- Ma stands for magnesium and fic is for iron (ferric). This group of silicates usually form in magmas moving up to fill the gap left when tectonic plates are moving away from each other in the sea floor. Basalt and gabbro are of this type. Olivine and pyroxene are also in this group. They are relatively dense and dark They are called ultra mafic. Plagioclase feldspars are mafic silicates that have calcium and sodium as part of their chemical composition.

Silicate Minerals:
1-Felsic Silicate Minerals:
1-1.Mica:
Mica is a metamorphic mineral. The many variations come from the diverse ways it formed. Mica formations are associated with volcanoes and hydrothermal vents.
1-2.Quartz:
Quartz is one of the most common of all minerals that make up the continental crust. It is found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.
1-3.Amazonite:
Amazonite is a beautiful green variety of microcline feldspar. Its chemical formula is KAlSi3O8 , potassium aluminum silicate.
2-Mafic Silicate Minerals:
2-1.Olivine:
Olivine is a magnesium iron silicate, and falls into the nesosilicate class. Gem quality crystals are called peridot.
2-2.Labradorite:
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral and so is a tectosilicate. It is valued for its beauty.
2-3.Biotite:
Biotite is a member of the mica branch of the silicate mineral group. It is common as a rock-forming mineral.

ORGONO Living Silica provides the ideal amount and absorption of the essential trace mineral silica. The main component of ORGONO is (G5) Fifth Generation Organic Silicon, Monomethylsilanteriol, CH3 (Si OH)3, the most effective silicon transporter and potentiator of other molecules. This patented formula, backed by scientific studies, offers superior nutritional support for your body and delivers numerous collateral benefits. Several studies have suggested that silicon may be beneficial in:

Calcium Absorption: Stronger and Denser Bones
Increased Collagen/Elastin Production
Joint Flexibility, Elasticity & Mobility
Cartilage Production
Connective Tissue
Healthy Circulatory System
Higher Tensile Strength Hair Follicles
Brighter & Flexibile Skin
Brighter & Stronger Nails
Aluminum Metal Elimination
Nerve Synapse Function-Signaling.

Side Effects of Silica Supplements
Silica supplements can originate from either silica dioxide or the horsetail herb. According to the Vital Health Zone, silica is a mineral that is only required in small amounts. Silica exists “predominantly in the connective tissues -- skin, blood vessels, cartilage, bone, teeth, tendons and hair.” Thus, silica is thought to promote healthy blood vessel walls, especially in the heart. You should always be aware that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate supplements as it does prescription medications. Thus, there are no strict guidelines that the manufacture of the supplement must adhere to in order to guarantee the product is safe for use.

Vitamin Deficiency

Medline Plus indicates that long-term silica use may result in loss of other essential vitamins from the body. For instance, silica supplements contain an enzyme called thiaminese, which destroys the vitamin thiamine or vitamin B1 in the body. After long-term use, you may discover that you are now thiamine deficient, which can lead to loss of muscle control and eventual paralysis. Medline Plus also warns that supplements labeled thiaminase-free have not been validated and are not guaranteed to be safe since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate supplement companies.

Silicium and Solar energy:

we use silicon for solar cells because we’re good at making silicon devices, not necessarily because silicon is the best material for solar cells. It’s no coincidence that we live in Silicon Valley. Integrated circuits built from silicon-based components are the foundation of the multi-billion dollar microelectronics industry. First patented in the south bay by Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor (who went on to found Intel), the commercial success of the integrated circuit has led to the production of more than 1 billion transistors annually per person worldwide! One of the main reasons that silicon is the semiconductor material of choice in microelectronics is that it forms a unique oxide on the surface when heated to high temperatures. This facilitates device fabrication for two reasons: (1) it neutralizes defects on the silicon surface and (2) it allows for straightforward planar processing.

Crystalline silicon:
By far, the most prevalent bulk material for solar cells is crystalline silicon (c-Si), also known as "solar grade silicon".Bulk silicon is separated into multiple categories according to crystallinity and crystal size in the resulting ingot, ribbon or wafer. These cells are entirely based around the concept of a p-n junction. Solar cells made of c-Si are made from wafers between 160 and 240 micrometers thick.

Monocrystalline silicon:
Monocrystalline silicon (mono-Si) solar cells are more efficient and more expensive than most other types of cells. The corners of the cells look clipped, like an octagon, because the wafer material is cut from cylindrical ingots, that are typically grown by the Czochralski process. Solar panels using mono-Si cells display a distinctive pattern of small white diamonds.

Oh interesting, I didn't know silicon was used in so many ways. Nice post!

thank you :)
