The new £10 note that just sold for £3,600 - what you should look for if you get one

 The new £10 note has entered circulation - which means you'll soon be seeing them in your change and being given them from cash machines if you haven't already.Each plastic tenner features a portrait of Jane Austen a quote from her novel Pride and Prejudice that reads: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading".

The better news is the new £10 note you get might also earn you thousands. Those with serial numbers starting with AH already popular with collectors.

Late Friday night a particularly special new £10 note sold on eBay for an astonishing £3,600  .The tenner has a serial number that combines the rare AH prefix with 1775 - the year Jane Austen was born. 

 

Other £10 notes to look out for

Serial numbers starting with 'AA01' were what to grab when the new fiver came out, but things have changed for the £10.With many of the AA01's goingto a special charity auction  , it looks like AH is the serial code you need as that's the one you'll find on the streets.So far, most of the early ones we've seen have had AH on them - - these have been selling for around £30 a pop since the note's launch.A few AA01 notes have since emerged, with these selling for  as much as £250 each .AE notes are also selling well, with people getting around double the face value of their notes.But there are some specific serial numbers that could well justify the hype.You should also look out for: JA01, they're Austen's initials; JA75, because that's Austen’s birth year; and JA17, the year of the author's death. 

  writes: "Whilst these will likely become popular with collectors in the future, it could be many years before notes with these serial numbers enter circulation due to the huge amount of possible combinations that would come before ‘JA’." 

 Serial numbers '16 121775' and '18 071817', which would represent Austen's date of birth and death respectively, might also fetch you a small fortune.Serial number '17 751817' includes her birth and death year combined. And '28 011813' was when Pride and Prejudice was first published, so might also be worth much more than the value it technically represents. 

 

New £10 note security features

The new £10 note has sophisticated security features to thwart counterfeiters.

• A see-through window featuring the Queen's portrait
• Winchester Cathedral shown in gold foil on the front of the note and silver on the back
• A quill at the side of the window which changes from purple to orange
• A hologram which contains the word Ten and changes to Pounds when the note is tilted
• A hologram of the coronation crown which appears 3D and multi-coloured when the note is tilted
• A book-shaped copper foil patch which contains the lettering JA
• Micro-lettering beneath the Queen's portrait with tiny letters and numbers that can be seen under a microscope
• The words Bank of England printed in intaglio (raised ink) along the top of the note
