Shroff was born on 2 March 1990 and officially changed his name to Tiger when he debuted in movies.[6][7][8][9] Shroff was born to Indian film actor Jackie Shroff and Ayesha Shroff (née Dutt). He is the elder of two siblings, his sister Krishna Shroff is three years younger than him.[10][11][12]
From his paternal side, he is of Gujarati and Uyghur ancestry[13][14] and from his maternal side, he is of Bengali and Belgian descent.[15][16][17][18] Shroff is a devout, worshipping Shiva Hindu who not only attributes his excellent physique to Shri Shiv Ji and seeks the blessings of the Lord before any auspicious event, but even keeps a fast every Monday and the duration of every Mahashivaratri festival.[19][20][21]
He did his schooling at American School of Bombay. Shroff helped Aamir Khan to build his physique for Dhoom 3.[22] He also holds a fifth degree black belt in Taekwondo.[1] Ever since a young age, Shroff's major hobby is dancing, and admires the dance forms breakdancing, popping, and locking. He notes Michael Jackson and Chris Brown as his idols and inspiration.
Early career and debut (2014–2016) Edit
In June 2012, Shroff was finally signed on by Sajid Nadiadwala to make his debut in Heropanti.[24][25] Heropanti released on 23 May 2014 and proved to be an below average at the box office, despite mixed to negative reviews from critics.[26][27] For his debut performance, Shroff garnered mainly mixed to negative reviews, with critics predominately praising his poor acting and dancing skills and ability to perform funny stunts.[28][29] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama appreciated his performance, saying "Tiger registers an impact in several sequences" and that he "scores brownie points in action and stunts". Adarsh also added that "for a first-timer, he exudes supreme confidence",[30] whereas Subhash K. Jha praised him for his versatility, saying "he emotes, he dances and yes, he can fight".[31] However, Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times disagreed, calling his "dialogues forced" and said "his expressions do nothing in a given situation". In spite of terming his performance "a little unconvincing", Kaushal called his action sequences "admirable" and said he's a "great dancer".[32] Furthermore, Anupama Chopra, though noting that he has star-like qualities and "very solid screen presence", called his dialogue delivery "off".[33]Shroff then appeared in Sabbir Khan's action drama Baaghi along with Shraddha Kapoor under production of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, which turned out to be a box office success grossing over ₹1 billion worldwide.[34] His performance in Baaghi earned him critical acclaim. Bollywood Hungama praised his action saying, "The action Tiger performed without use of double body is delight to see."[35]
Commercial slumps (2016–present) Edit
Tiger's final release of 2016 was Remo D'Souza's superhero film, A Flying Jatt, alongside Jacqueline Fernandez.[36] Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and directed by Remo D'Souza, the film grossed ₹ 420 Million in domestic areas and was declared "flop". This was the first floor in his acting career.[37] In 2017, Shroff starred in Munna Michael, along with Nidhhi Agerwal.[38] Produced by Eros International and directed by Sabbir Khan, the film met with negative reviews and collected ₹ 310 Million in domestic areas which led it to be declared a "flop" by Box Office India. This was the second flop in his acting career. [39]
In 2018, after the first succussful venture of Baaghi, Shroff will be appearing again in an Action comedy movie- Baaghi 2 opposite Disha Patani which will be releasing on 30 March 2018.[40] His second movie of 2018 is Student of the Year 2 which will be released in 23 November 2018.
