Background. of Lewis Carroll, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
Interesting as he was a math teacher like Epstein.
- Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English (with Irish connections), conservative and high-church Anglican. * Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy.
- His great-grandfather, Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin.
- His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies.
The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father.
- He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford.
- He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders.
- He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career.
- Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1830 and became a country parson.

When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.
A benefice or living is a reward received in exchange for services rendered and as a retainer for future services. The Roman Empire used the Latin term beneficium as a benefit to an individual from the Empire for services rendered. Its use was adopted by the Western Church in the Carolingian Era as a benefit bestowed by the crown or church officials. A benefice specifically from a church is called a precaria (pl. precariae) such as a stipend and one from a monarch or nobleman is usually called a fief.
Croft-on-Tees is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It has also been known as Croft Spa, and from which the former Croft Spa railway station took its name. It lies 11 miles (18 km) north-north west of the county town of Northallerton.
Charles's father was an active and highly conservative cleric of the Church of England who later became the Archdeacon of Richmond and involved himself, sometimes influentially, in the intense religious disputes that were dividing the church. He was high church, inclining toward Anglo-Catholicism, an admirer of John Henry Newman and the Tractarian movement, and did his best to instill such views in his children.
Charles suffered from a stammer – a condition shared by most of his siblings[8] – that often inhibited his social life throughout his years. At the age of twelve he was sent to Richmond Grammar School.
Dodgson did not claim he suffered from bullying but cited little boys as the main targets of older bullies at Rugby.
Scholastically he excelled with apparent ease. "I have not had a more promising boy at his age since I came to Rugby", observed mathematics master R. B. Mayor.
He left Rugby at the end of 1849 and matriculated at the University of Oxford in May 1850 as a member of his father's old college, Christ Church. After waiting for rooms in college to become available, he went into residence in January 1851. He had been at Oxford only two days when he received a summons home. His mother had died of "inflammation of the brain" – perhaps meningitis or a stroke – at the age of 47.
Despite early unhappiness, Dodgson was to remain at Christ Church, in various capacities, until his death, including that of Sub-Librarian of the Christ Church library, where his office was close to the Deanery, where Alice Liddell lived.
As a very young child, he suffered a fever that left him deaf in one ear. At the age of 17, he suffered a severe attack of whooping cough, which was probably responsible for his chronically weak chest in later life. Another defect which he carried into adulthood was what he referred to as his "hesitation", a stammer that he acquired in early childhood and which plagued him throughout his life.
He was adept at mimicry and storytelling, and was reputedly quite good at charades.
Dodgson had been groomed for the ordained ministry in the Anglican Church from a very early age and was expected, as a condition of his residency at Christ Church, to take holy orders within four years of obtaining his master's degree. However, he evidently became reluctant to do this. He delayed the process for some time but eventually took deacon's orders 22 December 22, 1861. But when the time came a year later to progress to priestly orders, Dodgson appealed to the dean for permission not to proceed. This was against college rules, and initially Dean Liddell told him he would have to consult the college ruling body, which would almost undoubtedly have resulted in his being expelled. However, for unknown reasons, Dean Liddell changed his mind overnight and permitted Dodgson to remain at the college, in defiance of the rules. Uniquely amongst Senior Students of his time Dodgson never became a priest.
In the interim between his early published writings and the success of the Alice books, Dodgson began to move in the pre-Raphaelite social circle. He first met John Ruskin in 1857 and became friendly with him. Around 1863, he developed a close relationship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his family. He would often take pictures of the family in the garden of the Rossetti's house in Chelsea, London. He also knew William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Arthur Hughes, among other artists. He knew fairy-tale author George MacDonald well – it was the enthusiastic reception of Alice by the young MacDonald children that persuaded him to submit the work for publication.
Dodgson also expressed interest in other fields. He was an early member of the Society for Psychical Research, and one of his letters suggests that he accepted as real what was then called "thought reading".
How he met Alice Liddell's family
In 1856, Dean (i.e., head of the college) Henry Liddell arrived at Christ Church, bringing with him his young family, all of whom would figure largely in Dodgson's life over the following years, and would greatly influence his writing career.
Dodgson became close friends with Liddell's wife Lorina and their children, particularly the three sisters Lorina, Edith, and Alice Liddell. He was widely assumed for many years to have derived his own "Alice" from Alice Liddell; the acrostic poem at the end of Through the Looking-Glass spells out her name in full, and there are also many superficial references to her hidden in the text of both books. It has been noted that Dodgson himself repeatedly denied in later life that his "little heroine" was based on any real child, and he frequently dedicated his works to girls of his acquaintance, adding their names in acrostic poems at the beginning of the text. Gertrude Chataway's name appears in this form at the beginning of The Hunting of the Snark
He who developed a friendship with the family and used to take out Alice's older siblings on a boat for picnics, then began taking Alice and her younger sisters out.
He used them as subjects for his photography.
The relationship between the Liddells and Dodgson suffered a sudden break in June 1863. There was no record of why the rift occurred, since the Liddells never openly spoke of it, and the single page in Dodgson's diary recording 27–29 June 1863 (which seems to cover the period in which it began) was missing.
It has been speculated by biographers such as Morton N. Cohen that Dodgson may have wanted to marry the 11-year-old Alice Liddell, and that this was the cause of the unexplained break with the family in June 1863. Alice Liddell's biographer, Anne Clark, writes that Alice's descendants were under the impression that Dodgson wanted to marry her.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—set up a photography studio in his rooms at Oxford, where he was a mathematics lecturer. There, he took self-portraits and portraits of famous artists of the era like Dante Gabriel Rossetti. But photographs of children dominate his production, and amongst the most troublesome pictures, there’s one that unnerved the BBC experts particularly.
It is an image of a pubescent girl called Lorina Liddell in the nude in a full-frontal pose, described in the documentary as an image that “no parent would ever have consented to,” the Telegraph reports. The controversial photograph was found in a French museum, with a note on the frame attributing it Carroll.
Lorina was the elder sister of Alice Liddell, the little girl who inspired the famous Alice character. Carroll befriended the Liddell family, and became infatuated with the couple’s daughters: Lorina, Edith, and, especially, Alice. In the BBC documentary, the literature Professor Hugh Haughton says that Carroll’s relationship with the Liddell girls was known to have a “huge intensity” which would seem “pretty strange now.”
“My understanding is that he was in love with Alice, but he was so repressed that he never would have transgressed any boundaries,” says Vanessa Tait, great-granddaughter of Alice Liddell, in the documentary. She adds that the explicit photograph may explain the rift that made Carroll break contact with the Liddell girls in 1863, when Alice was 11 years old. Crucially, Carroll’s diaries from April 1858 to May 1862, a period which coincides with his friendship with the Liddell girls, are missing.
Speaking in the documentary, the acclaimed writer Will Self doesn’t mince words: “I think, [Carroll] was a heavily repressed pedophile, without doubt. It’s a problem, isn’t it, when somebody writes a great book but they’re not a great person.”
Although the details about Carroll’s relationship with children in general, and with the Liddell girls in particular, might never be known, the evidence that he had a somewhat unhealthy obsession with minors seems overwhelming.
There was a documentary the BBC put out in 2015 entitled The Secret World of Lewis Carroll, with contributions from famous faces including Philip Pullman and Will Self, as well as members of the real Alice’s family.
It will debate whether new evidence shows Carroll, whose real name was Charles Dodgson, took an interest in sexualising young children and teenagers, and whether he should or could be considered a “Victorian Jimmy Savile”.
They go over more than questionable photographs with children in provocative, adult poses and uncovered new material.

Alice came to the US when she was 80 and was captured on film for the first time in New York. She said she said she thought her adventures overseas would be almost as interesting as her adventures underground.

Alice was 4 when Charles met her and he was 24.

She states Alice's father was appointed Dean of Christchurch this was considered very upscale as it was The place to go. they had glamorous parties, they were friends with royalty and Lewis Carroll was really drawn to all three Liddell girls.
Lewis Carroll was known to be very meticulous, so he kept detailed diaries. There is an interesting entry for April 25, 1856 when he was on a visit to the Deanery.
The three little girls were in the garden most of the time and we became excellent friends. We tried to group them in the foreground of the picture, but they were not patient sitters. I mark this day with a White Stone. This is something he noted when it was particularly special day!
Alice was singled out as the special one. She was pushy, imperious, as Lewis Carroll described her, shanking the fringe out of her face and sort of bossing everyone around.
This is a negative of Alice at the National Media Museum at around 6 years old.
Alice's older sister didn't like being photographed. Alice seemed to take to it.
Carroll would go into the nursery where the governess was and teach them magic tricks, read stories, he would go over there every day and have the girls to his rooms as well.
He got very involved in their lives. They went on outings including boat trips and he seemed to continuously be with them. These are words from family and those considered to be authorities on the real Alice and Carroll story.
Carroll and his friend Robinson Duckworth would take the three girls up the River Thames.

Alice wanted Carroll to write the stories he told down which is how Alice and Wonderland got written.
The story was littered with in jokes and real places like this well not far from from the River.

Lacie is an anagram for Alice, Elsie sounds like LC (Lorina Charlotte) and Tillie was the nickname of the youngest Liddell sister, Edith.
Lewis Carroll's account up the Thames River in 1862 when telling the story of Alice in Wonderland.
On the other page he writes later that he told them the story of Alice's adventures underground which it undertook to write out for Alice. It took him about a year or so, but eventually he did write it down for her and presented it as. a Christmas Present. according to Caroline Luke, the great grand niece of Lewis Carroll.

In this illustrationJournalist, Martha Kearney notes how interesting it is how he has drawn the White Rabbit. In suit and flowers almost as a kind of suitor with a much bigger more formidable kind of Alice.
He ends the book with a photograph he has taken of Alice.
Later on it was discovered underneath that was a drawing he had made himself.
In keeping with his perfectionism. there are no mistakes, he practiced the layout and as usual was very meticulous.
He used a realm rabbit to morph into what became the White Rabbit and in this drawing he is sort of hunched over and mournful while holding out his flowers.

Interesting as under the floorboards of the nursery room in his family's home was found a letter from his mother, stories or illustrations written on handkerchiefs, a white glove (missing glove?) and other accessories like a teapot lid, thimble.

Kearney asks the obvious questions, What exactly was going on with Carroll's relationship with children and what was the nature of the relationship with Alice Liddell?
He once asked Alice for a lock of her hair.
Some attempt to explain it casually away, yet people like Morten N. Cohen (wrote a biography of Carroll) states, "He was emotionally involved, there is just no question!"He says this is why he can't bear critics who say Carroll only had a paternal interest in the Liddell girls.
The great granddaughter of Alice, Tait feels he was in love with her. Will Self believes Carroll's repressed attraction to Alice is what makes his book so powerful.
This photo of Alice dressed as a beggar maid with the dress falling off of her shoulders and showing herself has always been more than questionable. It certainly doesn't lend to her being protected from predators or sexualization.
It certainly is Not what a father or paternal figure would take of a child. A father who loves their children does Not want them viewed as an object in this manner.
By the time Alice in Wonderland was published, the friendship between Carroll and Alice had come to an abrupt end.
Why?
A year or so after the boat trip, Something happened in 1863 and Carroll was exiled rom the deanery.
When people went to Carroll's diaries to find out, pages had been torn out. Why?
You can see a definite razor cut.
When his nieces inherited his diaries, they cut out a number of pages. Did they do so to protect a family member? For 5 months following the Liddell rift, there's no mention in the diary until December 5th concerning a theatrical evening where he speaks of Mrs. Liddell and the children being there, but he held aloof from them as I had been all this time.
