Elon Musk: AI will make jobs “pointless”, so focus on people and art

in #ai5 years ago

A lot has been said about the future of work in a world where AI will be super-intelligent and omnipresent.

According to Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, AI will make jobs pointless, so it’s time to consider what’s next for humanity.

“Probably the last jobs that will remain will be […] writing AI software and then eventually the AI will just write its own software”, he said during a discussion with Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma at the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.

Hi @varioso

Indeed a lot has been said already about it future where AI will be present even more within every aspect of our life and work. For many future may be difficult, with very little opportunities.

However I strongly believe, that people like us will be blessed with many new opportunities.

According to Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, AI will make jobs pointless, so it’s time to consider what’s next for humanity.

I respect Elon, however I disagree fully with this statement. Jobs may turn out to be pointless within more developed and wealthy countries. Only where AI would be benefitial and profitable.

Upvote on the way! :)

Yours,
Piotr

Hi @crypto.piotr,

You got a point there. Tech adoption starts in certain areas and then it quickly spreads throughout.

In less developed regions technologies, cheap computation and clean energy (already cheaper than fossil in certain countries) will open up unprecedented opportunities in the coming years.

And also, we haven't really begun to fathom what the world will look like when (almost) everything and anything is automated.

Thanks for the upvote :)

Hi @varioso

In less developed regions technologies, cheap computation and clean energy (already cheaper than fossil in certain countries) will open up unprecedented opportunities in the coming years.

Which countries do you have on your mind?
Piotr

Hi @crypto.piotr, e.g. Africa. Think about it, the continent is bathed in sunshine. When solar becomes mainstream, they will be in a very good position. Plus, they're not burdened by legacy infrastructure and mindset and have the chance to leapfrog the more developed ones in a few key areas. Sure, they have different problems now, but those too a solvable and many with technology that exists today.

There's more as well.

What are your thoughts?

Elon musk's views make more sense to me. They have very original ideas about the future of the world.

Don't you think that his views are a bit to depressive @sipahikara?

Dear @varioso

All this information leads me to one question:

So what will the money be for?

Now, many of us have a formal job which generates money for us in this work.
if the AI took care of everything, the money will not make sense, right

It’s just a little radical free thought.

Ps. I am a great follower of Elon Musk

I forgot, I think that underdeveloped countries will always have to lose ..
Greetings from Venezuela an extremely rich country in Coltan, and in constant struggle to be free.

Dear @lanzjoseg,

Thanks for your comment. It's a good question. My first thought is that if money is a tool for value exchange, thanks to all new technologies, value is only increasing.
Check this graph of the global economy from 1960 to today. It's mind-boggling:

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/ny.gdp.mktp.cd

I don't see any slowing down in sight. If we think of the crypto industry - a potentially multi-billion dollar market which didn't exist only a few years ago. How about the digital economy?

There's always going to be assets and (new ones) to be transacted upon. If jobs help us take care of essentials, that would change, sure. Cash may disappear, fiat - probably.

But money should be around for a while. Maybe in the form of tokens or something else.

But it's an interesting one to ponder upon. If you or someone wants to share their thoughts in the form of a post, it would be interesting.

hi @varioso

Friend, you were right.
I could make a post, with the subject in question.

"The future of AI" what will happen to the money ?.

I would like to have your opinion ..

@varioso, In my opinion one thing Artificial Intelligence cannot replace and that is World Of True Emotions.

@chireerocks, it's an interesting question. According to Elon again, AI will convince us that it loves us in a way that we can't tell whether it's real or not. And if you can't tell, then it's real.

Whether it'll replace, who knows. But replicate in a scarily convincing way, possibly. We literally don't have any idea what we're playing with. And the genie is out of the bottle.

What's your thoughts?

After reading these words first thought which comes into my mind is, may be we are already surrounded by Artificial Intelligence Human Race.

Hi @chireerocks

Perhaps it cannot replace, but AI can easily and efficiently fake it. To the point that people won't be able to tell the difference. ...

May be but sometimes the Truth is unimaginable.

My understanding is that AI will make much of the economy pointless, not necessarily all jobs. Available jobs will certainly transform. One neat way is computer programing. AI will automate much of the redundancies of programs and enable developers to create new computers simply by having a conversation with an AI. Of course teaching and philosophical concepts that are learned in higher education will limit such development to those with experience, degrees and self learned knowledge.

I guess you're right. What you're describing will be the reality at some point but we'll move quickly past that point, I think. What will follow might be AI which is indefinitely smarter than us and which might render not much the economy but humans pointless.

That's what Elon Musk means when he says we're just a "bootloader" for AI. "Our Final Invention" also talks about this.
https://www.amazon.com/Our-Final-Invention-Artificial-Intelligence/dp/0312622376

For better or worse.

So, now is the time to figure out exactly what role we can play in a world like that. It's not all doom and gloom but we need to give it some serious thought. Right now we're largely unprepared.

What will follow might be AI which is indefinitely smarter than us and which might render not much the economy but humans pointless.

Materially and logical smarts I agree with you, in many other respects (i.e. common sense and from the creative side of the brain) I do not.

That idea seems more of a marketing ploy or scare tactic for the obscenely rich to get poorer people to finance their AI effort. To me, AI is like a well crafted painter's brush vs finger paintings that we would create without AI. While we can be fooled into thinking AI is human-like, at the end of the day, it takes a human to provide "true" value for the human soul.

Those who are artistic can be rest assured that AI won't take their work

True that @fredkese. Not any time soon. And when it does (there are even now AIs who write music and poetry with varying success), there'll always going to be a market for human-made art, imho

btw, check this AI-generated heavy metal channel. Not into death metal but it doesn't sound bad for a computer

They are far from taking over

Looks like it :)

For me, Elon Musk is the genius of the present, his tenology and progress go hand in hand with the dream of humanity.

My thoughts exactly, @necho41. The Steve Jobs of today. Maybe more. Labels aside, he's one in a billion for sure, not only revolutionizing existing industries but creating new ones from scratch. Creating the future that is.

Elon Musk has taken his company to the highest cusp in technologies, including very advanced areas such as aerospace and medical, now it will start with AI, I imagine the progress of developing ...

The sky is the limit. Watching it closely. Even though Tesla stock isn't doing quite well right now. I'm optimistic about what's coming for it and Elon's other ventures.
