North shore climbing trip, October 2016: A MINNESOTA ADVENTURE

in #adventure6 years ago (edited)

I have always felt that Minnesota was always being overlooked for adventure.

I know I have often complained about the flat terrain, the millions of mosquitoes, and whatever the fuck else but I digress...everyone I've met who has never been to Minnesota pretty much just assumes all we have is farmland.

YA , YOU BETCHA! :thumbs up:

WRONG.

If you look hard enough though, there are so many little hidden gems. One such treasure is the area around Lake Superior.

I am so fucking fortunate to have a dedicated, encouraging, and incredibly fierce climbing crew. My boyfriend @ghostfish, our mutual friends Ross and Angie, all climb a hundred times better than I... I don't know why they are always happy to include my pansy ass in climbing things I didn't even WANT to think about.

We wanted to celebrate a final climbing and camping trip before the weather got too unbearably chilly so we all chose to climb the Mystical Mountain in the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, in Finland, Minnesota.

Though the place we set up camp at was crawling with RVs and other campers, it was really quite breathtaking. Lake Superior was mere minutes from our tent:

The mercury dropped to about 30 °F or -1°C at night. @ghostfish was a gent and gave me the warmer blanket to put over my sleeping bag. I was happy that we managed to stay cozy despite the minor discomfort.

The next day we awoke, continued to freeze our butts off, chugged our coffee and scarfed down a quick breakfast before driving to the ELC.

@ghostfish intently reading up on how NOT to kill us all.

The gear that kept us alive and in one piece. I believe in the power of the 'biner.

@ghostfish kindly started the route by inserting gears into the cracks. This is called trad climbing for those that aren't familiar. Trad climbing is a pretty extreme type of climbing after free solos, as you rely on gear placement to keep you safe. I admire the hell out of my dude. I really fucking do. The man has some cojones!

The walls on Mystical Mountain were pretty tall. I gather this was almost a hundred feet!

I gazed down at the treetops. Afraid as usual, but daring to look fear in the face as I always have.

Sometimes the best views are so goddamn hard to get to:

The scenery almost made me cry. I couldn't believe I dragged my ass up higher than I have ever been in my life, with this view as a reward.

Mother Nature, you always render my heart to shreds in complete awe of you, every single goddamned time.

The afternoon sunlight warmed my heart and danced through the fiery cloak of autumn leaves.

There's nothing like sharing hot jasmine tea with a friend after an exhilarating climb.

My friend Angie was also a splendor in the afternoon sun. A girl with a beautiful smile, and a heart of gold.

Thank you for looking! All photos were taken by yours truly, except of course the shot where I was drinking tea. DUH.

I may not be rich in material wealth and do not often have the money to travel to exotic locales, but I have a treasure trove of experiences and wonderful memories. I truly am grateful for the life I have been living.

Gorgeous photos! It so makes me want to be out there! I had my first mind-blowing north shore trip this past year... :) That area between Tettegouche and Manitou State Parks is just insanely magical. I can't wait to go back in the spring! Climbing there looks like great fun.

Gosh thank you!!!! I am so glad you got up there. It's so beautiful! I haven't taken an extensive hike around, but the North Shore is severely underrated. I definitely want to try hiking the SHT. The SHT is the shit! Hahaha.

There is a turn on highway 61 before Grand Marais that just makes me catch my breath every time. Have you been to the BWCA yet? If you haven't, you might just fall in love with the place! :D

Awesome stuff! I've always wondered what kind of climbing is around that part of the world. Definitely not renowned for it's tall peaks -- but crags are just about everywhere!

Awesome photos as well! Love the one overlooking the autumn valley. Very cool stuff. How long have you been climbing for?

Thank you so much @mstafford! I'm quite the n00b. I think my first outdoor climb was in the summer of 2015, but I don't do it consistently. I started out being terribly afraid of heights and this really helped me overcome some of that. I hope you get the chance to watch the documentaries "Jeff's World" and "Small Walls." they are both about climbing in the Midwest. :)

If you've ever heard of the Boundary Waters Canoe and Wilderness area, there looks to be some crazy crags in there too, but you have to canoe and portage to get to those.

Fuck yeah! Looks like an awesome time!

Cheers! :)

Thanks so much! It really was. :D

Minnesota is full of surprises if you know where to look. A personal favorite pastime was boating, but not for fishing; exploring. May have accidentally paddled into Canada a few times and even near the Cities there are a lot of islands in the Mississippi that made for great camping back in the day.

That's awesome! I'm too scared of paddling down the Mississippi. I'm a novice at paddling anything. Did you grow up here? :)

No I grew up on Aruba, but I lived in Mn for about 20 years or so. Now I'm like a tourist in my own country of the Netherlands. I also speak my native language; that helps. Fond memories of Mn. Greetings!

Hello hello! I am so happy that you have found awesome stuff about MN. It truly does not get appreciated enough. It's so cool that you have been traveling around. It does feel strange to come home, even though you speak the language. Following you now!

Thanks, I returned the favor and look forward to seeing some more Mn goodness. Returning to the Netherlands was always a surreal experience. You have childhood memories from when you were about 3 Ft. tall and when you return with a 5-6 foot point of view things look familiar, but a lot smaller.

Beautiful images and story. Thanks for sharing. I love Minnesota.

You're so nice for commenting on this post. For that, I gave you a vote! I just ask for a Follow in return!

@darkb4dawn I truly appreciate this, as well as the resteem! My goodness! I do love it here, I can't ever foresee myself leaving.

Looks like such a cool adventure :D
Wonderful photos @velveteendream got some acrobatic angles!

Thank you @lettieful!!! I wish I was brave enough to climb higher! :D
