RE: Are you viewing STEEMIT ads? // You should be

in #ads5 years ago

I don't have problems with seeing ads. I actually clicked on one of the ads today, and found it interesting. What I do have a problem with is the demands of advertisers.
When people or organisations become dependent on advertising revenue, the advertisers get the upper hand. They can dictate content and policy.
One thing I love about Steemit is the lack of censorship. There is a very small amount of censorship, but in general, the community polices itself. If the platform becomes dependent on advertising revenue, big advertisers can threaten to withdraw their revenue – if, for example, content that they deem might have a negative impact on their product, is published. We've seen this time and time again on other social media platforms. I don't want Steemit to go the same way.

Hmm. I see your point. I still think STEEMIT is way too small to be that interesting to big advertisers. There is also one more thing that i see as making us safe from that kind of outcome. That is the fact that STEEMIT is just one front end on the STEEM blockchain and because all frontends basically show the same thing, jumping from one to the other is much easier which means that if STEEEMIT decides to abide by advertiser wishes, we just jump over to STEEMPEAK or BUSY.
Thats why i dont see that happening.

Yes that is a good point. If the advertisers start dictating content, we can use another platform - as long as there are no advertisers dictating content there.

... You can always make your own. Shouldnt be too hard to clone steemit. A lot of people already done it. :D

My technical skills just about stretch to building my own website haha.
