My Actifit Activity Log [12.03.2018] ADDICTION AND THE SPIRIT

in #actifit5 years ago

Now’s the time to get real as we finish up our discussion on the spiritual aspects of health. This is something that brushes close along the lines of pain and pleasure... those all to human conditions.

Every single one of us has felt it’s tug as we navigate the difficulties, stresses, and challenges of life. Life is such that it leaves its mark on us all and it coincidently is something we all have in common.

Some of us carry scars that can be seen externally, proof that one has lived. After all... would anyone follow a general into battle that did not have scars? Probably not...

While others of us have been inflicted grievous wounds at more internal levels. Levels unseen. Like Bilbo Baggins (in Lord of the Rings) says. He feels like, “Butter spread over to much bread.” These people feel depleted by what life throws their way.

Their spirits are taxed and in search of something to fill those gaps they turn to bad habits or addictive behaviours.

These activities can be addicting because at their root they go further than changing the chemical responses in the body. They act as a conduit to some deeper need fulfilled. That is why these activities become addicting. Because at some fundamental level they sooth our SPIRITS.

The down side to this however is that addictive activities while feeding our SPIRITS also negatively compound other aspects of our health and well-being.

Be it an internet addiction or a drug addiction, an alcohol addiction or an addiction to “being right about things” addiction takes on many forms and each activity has its way of “taking care” of the individuals SPIRIT. That is why the activity becomes a part of the persons lifestyle... even though it is also harmful in some other way.

Quitting the addictive behaviour isn’t easily achieved because cutting the behaviour does nothing to address the deeper issues as to WHY the activity is being acted upon in the first place.

For example:
It’s not just a simple matter of quitting smoking. Yes! Quitting smoking would be good for the smokers health. But it would also leave the individuals reasons for smoking unaddressed greatly weakening the chances of actually quitting.

For many, smoking is not just a satisfaction of some physical need, rather it’s main draw could very well be the connection to other smokers that they get during their smoke breaks. For many smoking is a social activity. This is an example of why I say that addictions are actually spiritually derived.

Choosing activities intentionally to positively compound spiritual health and replace negative health compounders is vitally important if one is to successfully quit an addictive activity.

As well, you remember in previous posts, I associated Spiritual Health with understanding at a fundamental level WHY. Why do anything? Why aspire? Why set goals? Why even get out of bed in the morning?

Understanding the why behind the activities that constitute your lifestyle is absolutely critical both in setting new and healthy objectives and kicking negatively compounding and addictive habits to the curb.

Being honest with yourself is the only way to get to know yourself well enough to generate the willpower required to set inspiring goals and break habits that are holding you back from better health in all aspects. SPIRIT. Mind. Body.

So! If your wanting to set some new goals to improve your health. If your wanting to break some old habits that have been working against the improvement of your health. Taking the time to think deeply about your SPIRIT (your WHY) is worth doing! Replacing activities that negatively compound your health with activities that positively compound your health is the surest way to succeed.

If you would like to discuss this concept further with me please feel free to do so. I’m always ready to talk about health, fitness, and breaking unhealthy habits and addictions!

In health and fitness,

wil.metcalfe

Thank you Eric! This is an angle I haven't heard ANYONE cover in regards to dealing with addictions... I guess it's why I felt that I should write about it during our coverage of the SPIRIT health compounder.

Couldn't have said so better myself @wil.metcalfe <333 :) Thank you for 'going there'!

I'll be honest. Part of the issue is the current healthcare system today.more emphasis needs to be put on all aspects of health, not just the physical aspect. And, don't even get me started on the over-prescription of medication.
