RE: Rickysphotochallenge Week 6 Entry - Waterfalls

Great location, definitely worth the walk. When you go to such lengths it pays to take photos from a variety of different angles & viewpoints, "hedge your bets" as they say. Here's a few pro tips:

  1. In this shot you're pointing the camera at the sky, which is bright, but there isn't the same level of illumination on the waterfall, so it appears dim by comparison. Stepping left or right, bringing the angle down, and panning a little would also give you the main subject (waterfall) somewhere around the rule of thirds with additional surroundings and a better exposure.
  2. In dim lighting conditions such as forests or twilight you can imporvise a tripod by leaning against a tree or on top of a rock or low branch or signpost - this will stabilise the camera during longer exposures, which are common in low light.
  3. Also, look around for small and interesting details, you may find a tiny, beautiful micro world in 6" square area with shrooms, beetle, and new shoots all around the end of some decaying log.

Keep trekking, and Steem On!

Forgot to link rule of thirds.

Thanks for the advice!!!

It is an excellent photo and yes this was one of the reasons it didn't win the contest, still a stunning shot though
