SFS Contest Picture of the Day Week 52

The atmosphere in the classroom was offkey. The desks were set in a “U” shape, and they were outfitted with laptops ready to turn on and put to use. The students, dressed smartly in green uniforms and peci (traditional caps) and for female students black headscarves, were sitting in neat rows. They were watching with excitement and nervousness – it was the day of the Computer-Based National Assessment (ANBK).

In a far corner of the room, a teacher sat at a desk, holding her head up with one hand, every once in a while peeking at the screen of her laptop. The teacher had to make sure all the students could log on to the exam system without issue. Orange cords hung from the floor, linking the outlets to the laptops so the machines would not run out of steam in the middle of an exam.

Directions were given by the teacher before the examination commenced. “Just make sure that all you students and fill it in accurate. At the same time, the teacher was still supervising the examination through his own screen of the laptop that each student was securely connected to the ANBK server.

Time went on, and the tension eased. Certain of the students have started to look smug, grinning slightly after a string of answers. Though there were some who raised their hand to get help for technical glitches. The teacher got involved fairly promptly, not enough to stifle the room, but enough to not awkward out the room.

And then finally the bell rang and it was over.” The students let loose a sigh of relief. Some smiled in satisfaction, some looked still uncertain whether their work would hold water. The teacher cheered them on, “The most important is that you have done your best. Your effort will bear the fruits of success.”

Personally, it was a very good experience for us all on that day. They discovered that exams are not only about achieving grades, but also about building composure and discipline, about learning to confront adversity.
