Facebook's Let's check your device for malicious software [Fix]

in #facebook9 years ago (edited)

Today I was browsing Facebook on my computer when I noticed that I was disconnected from the chat. When I tried to refresh the page I was logged out of Facebook and I thought someone changed my password or something like that, so I tried to log in as fast as possible. To my surprise there was a message waiting for me (like this, just that it wanted me to download Trend Micro insted of Kaspersky):

I didn't want to download this software and the fact that Facebook forced me to download it didn't go well with me. What annoyed me with that, is that I knew I didn't have a virus, because I checked my computer with Avast and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware programs and they didn't detect anything. So I started Googling, but there was no good answer on how to get past that without downloading their scanner program. For all of the people who are in the same situation - Here is the solution:

  1. Check your computer for viruses with your anti-virus or anti-malware software of choice. If you don't find any viruses or you remove the viruses you may continue.
  2. You have to delete your cookies. You don't need to delete all of them, just the ones that facebook sets. For Chrome you can delete them like this: the three dots in the corner -> settings -> show advanced settings... -> under privacy select Content Settings... -> All cookies and site data... -> search for Facebook in the search box -> click on the x on the facebook cookies and click done
  3. Refresh the facebook page
  4. Before you log in, right click anywhere on the page and click inspect element.
  5. A box like in the image bellow will open and click the button shown there.
  6. A screen will change into something like that on the image bellow. From the dropdown menu select any device you want.
  7. Now all you have to do is log in, close the inspect element box with the x on the top right corner of the box and if you are still seeing the mobile version of Facebook just change the URL from m.facebook.com to facebook.com.
  8. Enjoy Facebook without downloading anything to your device.

Edit:
You won't be able to send links in the chat for some time. For me it took 3 days until I could post links again.
