The Common Jasmine
Jasmine, also called Indian Jasmine or Common Jasmine is a flower found in many parts of the world. The plant has been cultivated in different countries from ancient times for its fragrant flowers. In Pakistan, it is the nation's official national flower.
It can be propagated through cuttings and this process was first recorded by Muslim physicians during the Middle Ages; they were mainly interested in medicinal properties of plants and wrote about how to grow various types of plants such as jasmine (Jāsmīn). Today's scientific name "jasminum" derives from Persian Yasameen via Arabic Yasmîn) meaning “fragrance” or "spice".
The English word jasmine is most likely derived from the Sanskrit word yasmin or Jasmine. However, most modern English vocabulary is based on Greek loan words rather than Latin.
The common jasmine used to be classified in the genus Jasminum, but in 2005 it was transferred to "Jasminum", which now contains about 250 species.
The taxonomic name Jasminum angustifolium (L.) Jacq is the correct scientific name for this species, and botanists believe that about 198 of those 250 are native to Asia.
The genus "Jasminum" can be divided into six groups; however, these groups may not be monophyletic.

The jasmine flower is most commonly associated with the night blooming, white/yellow flowers of Jasminum grandiflorum (officially classified in "Jasminum sambac"), which are used to produce various scents and for religious ceremonies in South Asia. Many species of jasmine are used for their perfume or to create scented oils for use in aromatherapy. There are many species of "Jasminum" that are known as wild jasmine, but this name is usually applied to the very common native species J. officinale, widely distributed throughout temperate North America and Mesoamerica.
