ColorChallenge - Wednesday Yellow - 📷 Hverir geothermal area, Iceland

Hverir is one of the most out-of-this-world sites on the island of Iceland. It is a place where you feel connected to the power of the planet. Hverir is a large geothermal field of bubbling mud pools, hissing fumaroles and sticky red soil. Here the lungs are filled with that eggy Icelandic whiff - the smell of sulphur which is similar to that of rotten eggs. There is a lack of vegetation and flora, caused by the high temperatures in the area, unworkable soil and steam that fills the atmosphere. The constant release of volcanic fumes has rendered the ground extremely sterile and acidic, making it unfit for any plant growth.

Hverir is a geothermal area with at the foothill of Namafjall, not far from Lake Myvatn. Features include colorful sulphurous mud springs, steam vents, cracked mud and fumaroles. It is also called Hverarönd or Namaskard.

Hverir is not a big site but offers many features very close from one another. It is a the foot of a beautiful dark mountain.
The large geothermal field of Hverir is a unique wasteland in which pools of boiling mud, hot springs and hissing chimneys give life to a desolate Mars-like scenery.

Each of the viewpoints shows a stunning view over the green and blue western landscape, with lake Mývatn, and over lava fields and striking dark mountains on the eastern side. It’s like being on the border between two different worlds in the distance, having a third one, a red and brownish steamy world, all around and below you.

Everything simmers at boiling point and great caution must be taken when walking around the area.
