Catalan Vote For Independence Sends Spain Into Chaos. Catalans voted in a bitterly-contested referendum on Sunday which descended into chaos. The national government says the poll is illegal and its result will be dismissed. Schools became battlegrounds as Spanish police used force to try and shut down the ballot.
