secrecy

Secrecy - I have often wondered why it's necessary.

Children seem to enjoy whispering secrets into their friends' ears as a sign of some mutual bond and superiority over those not in 'the loop'.

Whenever I am approached by anyone offering to share a secret, I respectfully decline – to me it always seems like a burden, extra baggage that I don't wish to carry.
Similar to buying stuff we don't need, which is bad enough, but then also having to remember who to hide it from.
However, as a society we seem to enjoy secrecy or at least accept its necessity as an axiom.

Secrecy is obviously a form of control and like all forms of control stems from fear.
What I find amusing and puzzling is the fact that we partake in the elusive game of democracy by electing our public representatives only to pass on to them the responsibility of keeping secrets from us.

In other words, we appoint and authorize our leaders to protect us from information that they decide might harm us.

Absurd!
