The presentation to the world of the first X-ray photograph gave human beings the possibility to see what is inside us, what keeps us standing, which was until then only possible postmortem.

The German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen was the responsible for this extraordinary discovery which was presented to the world for the first time in 1895.

Among his first x-rayed objects is his wife's left hand. It is reported that on seeing the picture she said "Ich habe meinen Tod gesehen" ("I have seen my death").

Röntgen called the new ray "X", signifying the unknown and received the first Nobel Prize for physics, in 1901, but gave away the prize money. Gratefully for all of us he never patented his invention. He died in poverty in 1923.
