Snakes as pets?
Snakes as pets?
Uggh… that’s the reaction of most people. Most people think that snakes are highly dangerous animals, but actually only a few species can hurt. Even those that are poisonous(e.g cobra) would rather slip away quietly than stay and fight with you. Do you know that snakes help to get rid of rats and mice?
Which snake to keep?
Cobras are out … they are poisonous! Tree snakes are among the prettiest and the easiest to keep.
The grass green whip snake is ideal- it is long, slim and bright green with a long pointed nose, very friendly and almost never try to bite. The reticulated python also makes a beautiful pet.
Where to keep them?
Snakes are quite happy in a small cage just as long as there is a branch on which they can climb and rub their skins off.
A sheet of newspaper can be placed at the bottom of the cage- this makes cleaning out easier- a change every 3 or 4 days should be sufficient.
What and how to feed a snake?
Most snakes can live for quite a long time with out food- but they need water. So do keep on container full at all times.
Tree snakes love geckos. 3 or 4 per week should be sufficient. Remember that these lizards must be alive as the snakes like to catch their own food. So throw one in with your pet and watch how it catches its prey!
Pythons are quite happy with 2 or 3 live mice or small chicks a week. Watch it, they do grow rather quickly, so you may have to build a bigger cage after a year or so.
Habits
Snakes are rather nervous creatures. If threatened, they might bite. So if you want to handle your snake, be very careful and gentle. The bite of a non-poisonous snake does’nt really hurt but it can be quite a shock.
Don’t expect your snake to do tricks like dogs and cats. Snakes like to curl up in a corner or over a branch except when hungry.
Advantages
Well , snakes do not mess up the house, do not need constant attention, do not make noise, do not need to be fed and cleaned daily and only need a small space to live in how about keeping one?
