Jambinai, the most successful post-rock band from Korea

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hello, Steemians! @yonah from Korea here. There are many communities in Steemit, but barriers of language and culture prevent everyone from communicating. I hope that every single Steemian is free to communicate regardless of their origin or language.

Therefore, I decided to post writings about Korean culture to introduce it. Musics, movies, festivals, ... hope you guys enjoy this :)

Jambinai: the most successful Korean post-rock band

jambinai_profile.jpg

Jambinai sound less like a band than a force of nature, fusing the full dramatic range of post-rock dynamics to Korean folk roots to create an exhilarating, vivid and unique fusion. Their instrumental music is coloured by Kim’s fiddle-like haegum, Ilwoo Lee’s guitar and piri (a Korean flute made of bamboo) and Eun Youg Sim’s geomungo, a Korean zither. They met studying traditional music at Korea’s National University of Arts, and found they were united by a desire to present such music in a new way, “to communicate with the ordinary person who doesn’t listen to Korean traditional music,” says Lee, the band’s principal writer. This makeover, however, eschews previous Korean modernists, who Lee says have used western classical music or jazz, for a molten fusion of metal, rock and experimental sound. “We’re darker than other Korean traditional bands,” Lee adds, with considerable understatement.

Jabinai's music is categorized into 'post rock', but their music is quite difficult to define in one word. Their music is heavily based on traditional Korean music. The instruments they are using are Korean traditional ones, and The emotion of music also contains 'Han', which is unique cultural sentiment in Korea.

They began to become famous through various festivals both at Korea and abroad(Finland, Mexico, US, ...).

In 2014 they joined SXSW, the largest music festival in the United States, with fellow Korean musicians, and they also stood on the Glastonbury stage in the same year.

Jambinai is the first Asian band to sign the British label 'Bella Union'. After joining the label, they are playing their music all over the world. (Some Korean fans are kidding about them 'Please perform in Korea. Please visit Korea')

In 2016 they performed at Hellfest, France.

They have released two regular CDs and one EP, and they are still continuing their musical activities.

That's awesome, I'm going to be sure to check them out. What's your favorite aspect of Korean Culture? I've been wanting to visit Japan for the longest time and am thinking about going to South Korea too - The people and Culture seem brilliant!

I think the most impressive aspect of Korean culture is the coexistance of old and new. Since Korea had been developed In a very short period, one can easily find old-fashioned traces anywhere. I mean, both physically(i.e. conventional market, undeveloped roads) and mentally. Elders tend to stick to the old Confucian culture, and young people tend to enjoy individualism and Western culture. Conflicts and harmony between the two are revealed throughout the culture.

If you come to Korea, please visit either Seoul or Gyeongju. You can see the harmony of old and new! Thanks for reading this :)

Really enjoyed Time of extinction, on the live one now. Cheers

If you enjoyed Time of extinction, you'll like the live one too. Thank you :)
