Ulog 9: Garden Update

in #ulog8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemfam!

We were blessed with a good day of rain yesterday. Here is a garden update! It's been almost a month since we got it all planted. If you'd like to learn more about how this garden was established you can find out more here

The grass is also loving the extra attention and water. It's so long! It may look irregular though i don't think it matters much to the growing veggies 🤣

The rhubarb is happy as heck!! Which is great to see.

Ok! In this little patch are the runner bean seeds I got in a seed package from my friend from the far east side of the country on the coast. @lyndsaybowes sent them early last year in the snail mail. I did not get a chance to plant them last year. All three seeds sprouted and are doing wonderfully!!

Here they are! Up close 💖

The runner beans have the big broad leaves. There are peas in there beside it.

Onions & Garlic Happy as can be 😊

The squash bedding plants are looking yellow so we will add extra coffee grounds, and some mushroom compost and composted manure. Anyone have any other suggestions to help these lil'buggers out? Would fish fertilizer help?

So, funny story! My sister had a dream. She and I were planting these seed potatoes. She planted the ones she bought from the store. And, i was planting what seemed like crappy bits of megaly sprouted potatoes that and she tells me about the dream. Her dream was that the seed potatoes from grandma via my last season garden all grew but her store bought ones did not. Well, it looks like most of them came up but I am surprised to see some did not!

Wild Mushroom babies!

And, an update on the guerrilla gardening too! The zucchini are about to blossom 😊 all plants are doing great. But, looking yellow. Hoping that the mushroom compost and some coffee grounds will help that.

Seeing as though the five mounds of guerilla gardening are doing great, i am thinking to add a few more mounds. Spinach, kale, beets and swiss chard! That makes four!

I will keep you posted as progress continues! Much Love SteemFam! All is well 💖🌸💖

I love seeing everyone's gardens coming up! Your rhubarb is doing so good! Gosh, I have two rhizomes that I stillhaven't gotten in the ground. I better get on it!😬😏

Haha! I did the same with some honey berry bushes and goji berries too :,( now they are long gone i think. They lived two seasons in pots but i don't think they survived last winter. We're still planting the rest of the front too. With raspberries and not sure what else!!

Hey! Looking gooood!! So much fun seeing your babies grow! Have you tried comfrey fertiliser??? That's a cheap alternative to seaweed fertiliser, though you'll have to wait a couple of weeks for it to brew. I'd recommend getting some on the brew anyway so you have a whole bucket of free fertiliser reaady to go.

I agree that’s a great additive, plus growing your own comfrey it great on multiple levels, it’s an awesomely healing plant as well as making great fertilizer ☺️

Hi! Great idea! Comfrey is awesome! Had never heard of using it for fertilizer before. Good to know! Thanks for stopping by !

@laundrylady has an amazing post detailing comfrey fertiliser. Check it out. We are both MASSIVE advocates for comfrey.

For some reason the link for @laundrylady isn't working. I think i have seen her post before but am not sure how to find her!

Oh no... @thelaundrylady let me see if I can find the link for you xx

Okay so I left the the off... i tagged you in her post xx

Oh yeah! Thanks i didn't add 'the' ... let's see how this

You have a wonderful farm... When you plant coffee you will have self-sufficiency from everything.... Because you are planting beautiful things on the farm and you are also planting a lot of love here and it will be a great fruit in the near future 💜💜💜💜

Coffee bushes would be fantastic!!!! I'd have to create a special micro cimate to grow them! Maybe in an earthship atrium like Rob has going on!! What an idea. You supply such a welcome and beautiful comment @yagoub! Thank-you for blessing the comments of this blog with your presence! Much love friend 💖💖💖

Nice work! Looks like a ton of food is coming up. Hooray! 💖

Your garden looks great! You have mushrooms showing up means your soil is alive and doing well. It takes a few weeks to make comfrey fertilizer, so if you want to use something quicker to try to perk up the yellowing squash, try liquid seaweed. You can do a foliar spray, it's the fastest way to help a sick plant. You can also brew some compost tea if you already have mushroom compost.

Great tips!!! Thank-you so much!! There's a canal near my house that the glacier water is diverted from a river. And, lots of sewaweed grows in it. I bet i could collect a little of that & add some fish fertilizer to help it perk up. I will give it a try!

You just planted 0.65 tree(s)!

Thanks to @sallybeth23

We have planted already 3598.05 trees

Lovely photos. Everything is coming onbeautifully. The zucchini look good too only very slight yellowing on a leaf... overall looking very healthy - do you pee in your wateringcan? Every ting loves that and it’s free😉

Haha! I love that idea. I will give it a try. I do offer my diva cup to the watering can when i remeber to set-up for it. LOL nature is so funny sometimes 😂👍 it's always a pleasure you drop by!!!

Diva cup🤣Permaculture methods are so the best for gardening -I can’t wait to see how this progresses ... how about some grapevines growing up those pallet boards? 😉

I will have to research 'grapevines' don't know what they are!! But, yes! Using all the vertical space to grow is certainly fun and a good way to go. I was pretty concerned, yesterday we got severe rain and hail. So, mentally prepared the garden would have been demolished. Luckily it came from the east and the big fence blocked most of it! Phew!! Dodged that bullet. My first garden was decimated by hail. In the middle of August! just before harvest. Took a while to get over that one. Gardening!! Makes you emotionally strong!! Haha. Anything weird happen in your past gardens?

Hail stones in August???? Good grief, well no one can be prepared for that! Thankfully no similar weirdness to share in my past gardens🤣Gardening can be a tumultuous ride though, even if it’s just bugs eating the crops when you turn your back for a moment. That’s where permaculture diversity really pays off, so fewer pests it seems 😉

B8F895B0-FF6C-4F82-B8DE-760C2974FF24.jpeg this is a vine growing grapes ......grapes red or green are what wine is made from but they are delicious to eat straight as a fruit too.
I think I would make net frames over my garden if hail stones are anything like regular. To ruin months of work in a few minutes just isn’t an option!!!

Ahhh! Grapes!! Would be such a treat if they'd grow here. I don't think they do. Winter us too cold and summer likely too short. I think they grow in BC and maybe even ON. Not really sure tbh. Would be so ultra cool to set-up mini micro-climates using permaculture technique and atrium indoor growing spaces. To grow coconut, avacado, papyas, pineapple and mangos!!! .....so dreamy 🤣🙏

Your garden is very beautiful. Green grass, small plants and beautiful flowers have soothing effect on mind. I think you can plant vegetables and fruit trees also in your garden.

Hi @axdx, thanks for dropping by! Nature has such a soothing effect on the psyche. We are planning to plant berry bushes! Do you grow a garden?

You're welcome! Unfortunately I live in a flat. I don't have enough space. However, I have some flower plants in flowerpots.

Good for you! Sprouts & some herbs are pretty easy to grow. Sprouts take such little space, provide awesome nutrients and taste so good! I live in a small urban space too. The garden is at my sister's where she has more yard space to work with. Growing in pots is what I do too. That and guerilla gardening!! Shhhhh! Haha. Homegrown veggies are the best!!!

Homegrown veggies are the best!!!

No doubt. They are full of natural ingredients and free of chemicals and of course they are fresh.

you should look into a DIY worm bin..

That idea has been purculating a while now! Such a good idea!
