In the year 1968, in the city of New York, the orchestra Fania All Stars was created, to gather the best musicians and singers of the record label Fania Records, a company that had been very successful in recording and disseminating Latin music.

That same idea of bringing together the best musicians for specific musical projects was replicated in many countries. So it happened in Venezuela. In most cases, these orchestras, following the line of the Fania All Stars, were dedicated to Salsa.

In Venezuela at that time there was a musician with innovative musical ideas and who had been doing an extraordinary job as a drummer. He had stood out as a session musician, in the most important studios of the capital and he carried jazz harmony concepts that were extremely advanced for that time. That musician was the one who decided to gather the best session musicians to make a project that would not only focus on salsa, but it should be an integral music project, his idea was to combine a Big Band type group, accompanied by instruments of Latin percussion and music in the concept of Latin jazz. The name of him Alberto Naranjo, a very unique musician who deserves a full post, which I will try to write soon.

As a baseball lover he is, he decided to use a Venezuelan term used in this sport to designate the team of the best, Trabuco and from there the orchestra was born as El Trabuco Venezolano". Although the idea of the creator of the project was not to do it as a salsa project, followers of this genre and the Fania boom and its regional variants, quickly pigeonholed it into this musical category.

The orchestral knowledge of Naranjo, added to his revolutionary concepts of harmony and to the extraordinary quality of all the members of the project, resulted in a product that became a mandatory reference within the Latin music scene and much beyond.

Founded in 1977, El Trabuco Venezolano recorded 5 studio albums and 2 live albums together with the Cuban group Irakere, with whom they were often compared because of their musical performance levels.

The complexity of managing so many top-notch musicians did not allow the Trabuco to have much continuity, but even today there are still re-encounters and tributes that highlight the importance of this legendary musical project in Venezuela, as well as the very high musical level of the proposal. Paste year they celebrated 40 years with an outstanding​ concert in Teresa Carreño Theatre, Caracas, where both, Naranjo and the orchestra, were recognized with the title of Cultural Heritage, a distinction granted by the national government to creators who through their work have contributed to the projection of the cultural heritage of Venezuela..

En el año 1968, en la ciudad de Nueva York, se creó la orquesta Fania All Stars, para reunir a los mejores músicos y cantantes del sello disquero Fania Records, empresa que con mucho éxito se había dedicado a la grabación y difusión de la música latina.

Esa misma idea de reunir a los mejores músicos para proyectos musicales específicos se replicó en muchos países. Así mismo sucedió en Venezuela. En la mayoría de los casos, estas orquestas, siguiendo la línea de la Fania All Stars, se dedicaban a la salsa.

En Venezuela para esa época había un músico con una ideas musicales innovadoras y que venía haciendo un trabajo extraordinario como baterista. Había destacado como músico de sesión, en los estudios más importantes de la capital y cargaba unos conceptos de armonía en jazz que eran extremadamente adelantados para ese tiempo. Ese músico fue quien decidió reunir a los mejores músicos de sesión para hacer un proyecto que no se centraría solo en la salsa, sino que debía ser un proyecto de música integral, su idea era combinar una agrupación tipo Big Band, con acompañamiento de instrumentos de percusión latina y música en el concepto del latin jazz. El nombre de él Alberto Naranjo, un músico muy singular que merece un post completo, el cual trataré de hacer próximamente.

Como amante del béisbol que él es, decidió utilizar un término venezolano usado en este deporte para designar al equipo de los mejores, trabuco y de allí la orquesta nació como “El Trabuco Venezolano”. Aunque la idea del creador del proyecto no era hacerlo como un proyecto de salsa, los seguidores de este género y el boom de la Fania y sus variantes regionales, lo encasillaron rápidamente en esta corriente musical.

Los conocimientos orquestales de Naranjo, sumados a sus revolucionarios conceptos de armonía y a la extraordinaria calidad de todos los integrantes del proyecto, dieron como resultado un producto que se convirtió en una referencia obligatoria dentro de la escena musical latina y mucho más allá.

Fundado en 1977, El Trabuco Venezolano grabó 5 discos de estudio y 2 discos en vivo junto al grupo cubano Irakere, con el cual se le solía comparar con frecuencia por el nivel musical.

La complejidad de manejar a tantos músicos de primera categoría no permitió que el Trabuco tuviera mucha continuidad, pero aún hoy en día se siguen haciendo reencuentros y homenajes que resaltan la importancia de este legendario proyecto musical en Venezuela, así como el altísimo nivel musical de la propuesta. El año pasado celebraron su 40 aniversario con un excelente concierto en el Teatro Teresa Carreño de Caracas, donde ambos, Naranjo y la orquesta, fueron reconocidos con el título de Patrimonio Cultural, una distinción que confiere el Gobierno nacional a creadores que con su trabajo hayan contribuido a la proyección del acervo cultural de Venezuela.

Por su parte Alberto Naranjo siguió con su carrera como músico, productor musical y arreglista, en Venezuela y en Estados Unidos.
