Shouldn't Feminists Challenge Saudi Laws Instead of Protesting Apple & Google for Absher App?

in #feminism7 years ago (edited)

Last week, US Senator Ron Wyden had twitted to remove Absher - a free Google & Apple app in Saudi Arab arguing that it promotes “abusive practices against women".

Now the Saudi Government has defended it by saying that the Absher app serves “all members of the society... including women, the elderly, and people with special needs” and hence it's not discriminating.

This smartphone app provides services like renewal of passport, visa etc. But rights activists have alleged that this app allows men to track movements of their women and girls. Even employers can track the movements of their female employees.

I've read some stories of how this app made difficult for tortured women to escape from the shackles of their men.

But under Saudi law, women must have consent from her husband or her male guardian to renew her passport or leave the country.

Now, I wonder, isn't this law that should be objected instead? What's the point in urging Google & Android to discontinue that app which is being offered in collaboration with Saudi government!

IMO, if feminists are any serious, they should oppose the basic Saudi law that discriminates women from men.
