Too much of a good thing..

in #life9 years ago (edited)

My mother used to warn me about enjoying something or someone's companionship too much. She would say things like, "absence makes the heart grow fonder " lol of course when I got older and became interested in women she would alter that to "abstinence makes the heart grow fonder". We would both laugh at that, but we both knew she was right.

Too much of a good thing can ruin it for me.
For instance, one time I went to a warehouse store where all the products were sold in bulk form. I found a huge industrial sized can of chocolate pudding. I love chocolate and I love pudding and I love them together. I bought this pudding! Heck yeah! I took it home and put it away waiting for the right time to open it. Like a party or something. Parties came and went and I would forget to bring out the can. One day I decided I wanted pudding and lots of it. It must've been a gallon. I used the can opener and opened it up. I had a large bowl and poured it in. There was still three quarters left in the can. I asked around the house to see if anyone wanted to help me finish off this container before it went bad and there were no takers.

I steeled myself with the resolve to finish off as much of the gallon can as I could, because waste not want not right? That first bowl? Yeah, I was sick of pudding by the time I was halfway through. I had too much of a good thing. Through the remainder of the week I managed to polish off a whopping half of the gallon before I was so disgusted by the sight of it that I had to throw it away, that and it became manky because I stored it in the can instead of moving the remainder into another vessel.

Friendships are the same way. You sort of fall in together and can't get enough of each other at first. Always hanging out and going to do fun things together, but then the newness and the romance/bromance wear thin or out and you're stuck not knowing what else to do together. This is when tactical separation should take place and you each go your separate ways for a few days or a week or two and then get back together for more excitement, but most often times people just have a falling out and don't bother trying to get back together and make things work out. I've had so much experience with both scenarios that I'm a guru, self proclaimed and unabashed.

My suggestion is have a couple of great days together and then take time out for a few days, then get back together. Make it a slow burning relationship instead of a fiery comet that ends in destruction, unless that is what you're going for. Take smaller portions of food and people and you'll see that it lasts longer.

After all, mom was not a dumb woman, absence/ abstinence does make the heart grow fonder.

Much love and light,

P.S. A friend just pointed out this works for family as well.
Thanks Deerjay! Much appreciated.
